Where to get your sushi, bento and ramen fix around town

Japanese food has always been a tasty go-to.

And lately, the Illawarra has been serving up even more incredible Japanese spots to try.

Whether you’re craving sushi, a steaming bowl of ramen, or an all-you-can-eat Japanese feast, you’ll find it here.

Now, don’t get us wrong, we love a quick sushi hit at the shopping mall as much as anyone. But for this roundup, we’re focusing on places where you can sit down, settle in, and seriously dig in. [Save that food court sushi fix for next time!]

1 // Fuji Yama Tepan Restaurant

Experience the thrill of teppanyaki as your meal is BBQ’d right in front of you. Watching the chefs work their magic as they cook, play, and even serve food straight into your mouth is all part of the fun.

This restaurant was once a Wollongong location but can now be found in Fairy Meadow, bringing the same delicious food and entertaining vibe to the area.

We think every Illawarra local has to try it at least once [if not more]. It’s ideal for birthdays, corporate events, or any celebration that calls for a little extra flair.

2 // Toro Sushiya

Everything comes out so beautifully plated at this Thirroul restaurant.

You’ll find loads of wonderful Japanese options here, as well as some Korean dishes.

And did you know there are actually two locations around town for the Toro goodness?

One at Lawrence Hargrave Dr in Thirroul, the other on Corrimal St in town.

We do have to admit we are suckers for dining under that faux cherry blossom tree inside the Wollongong location.

3 // Roppongi Japanese Restaurant

A staple in the Illawarra for over 20 years, this spot is named after a lively entertainment district in Tokyo.

The staff are always friendly, the food is flavourful and reasonably priced, and there are plenty of exciting options to choose from.

Go light and decadent with buttery sashimi, or try classic Japanese comfort food with a warm and satisfying bowl of oyakodon, which is chicken, egg, and rice.

4 // Akari

Gotta love a good lunch special, especially when they are as tasty as the ones at Akari.

And next time we visit, we are totes treating ourselves to one of amazing sounding banquets. Such an excellent way to get a taste of all the deliciousness the restaurant has to offer.

Obviously with a glass [or two] of that Plum Sweet Sake as well.

5 // Japanese Bento House

We’re almost hesitant to let this one out, but this underrated Illawarra gem is too good to keep quiet.

It’s a tiny spot, only open on weekdays, yet it serves up incredibly yummy Japanese and Korean dishes at a really decent price.

We sometimes go to bed dreaming of those sticky sweet potatoes [if you know, you know] along with the generous sushi portions and totally delish veggie pancakes.

You might be tempted to grab something quick from the counter, but trust us, take a seat and order off the menu. You won’t be disappointed.

6 // Tsuki Dining

The vibe here is calm and bright, and the food is simple yet elegant.

Located right on Crown Lane, it’s an excellent spot for a dinner before a night out, but with the fun cocktail menu, it’s also great for a night out on its own.

We also think the banquet for two is a cute date-night option, especially if you go for the sake pairing. Go on, treat yo selves!

7 // Katsu Tabi Restaurant

New on the scene and already getting rave reviews.

They specialise in Teishoku, a traditional Japanese set meal where all the dishes are served together as a set.

Oooh, and all the Teishoku sets actually come with unlimited rice. Sign us up!

8 // Sakura Sushi

The crew at Sakura Sushi focus on high-quality, fresh fish, and it shows in every dish.

Our biggest problem when we visit is how much we can actually fit in our bellies because even though the menu is extensive, everything on it is soooo tempting.

You can also keep an eye on their Facebook page as they regularly share the different seasonal fish they are serving up.

9 // Beast – Good Food Eatery

Gotta love a hearty bowl of ramen on a chilly day [or on any day, for that matter]

Slurp down on your choice of bone broth ramen aka tonkotsu or bonito + konbu ramen aka Tokyo ramen.

Both options come with that iconic half egg, but sometimes we like adding an extra egg, extra pork, or even karaage on the side, just ‘cause.

10 // Okami

When we heard this popular all-you-can-eat Japanese spot was opening in Unanderra, we were beyond excited!

Like, who could resist two hours of unlimited sushi, teriyaki, katsu, tempura, steak, and even ice cream?

Definitely book ahead to avoid missing out, and don’t forget the stretchy pants for maximum munching.

11 // Waterview

Cracking food + stunning views = a special meal out.

Right in the heart of the Shellcove Marina, here you’ll find well-crafted and fresh dishes like sushi, sashimi, and tempura, plus a mix of modern and traditional Japanese styles.

Grab a table right by the windows for the best dining experience.
