While we fully support a healthy rotation of hoodies, trackies and socks with thongs through the cooler months, it’s time to swap the dressing gown for an actual outfit and get out amongst it.
Luckily, winter in the Illawarra means many, many reasons to leave the house.
Here’s a list of fab ways to make the most of the cooler months.
And don’t forget to check our event directory for even more local happenings across June, July and August.
1 :: Get toasty at a local sauna
You won’t even notice it’s frosty outside once you’re sweating it out in one of our local saunas.
A sesh at a sauna during winter won’t just get you all heated, it soothes tired [and probably cold] muscles, helps fight seasonal blues, and leaves you feeling toasty and relaxed… all the things we love.
City Cave in Wollongong and Dapto are two excellent local saunas, especially since you can add a float for extra relaxation. Check out more fab sauna options in our directory here.

2 :: Settle down by a fireplace for a drink [or two]
One surefire [pun intended] way to make it through an Illawarra winter is with a drink in hand by the fire at a local hang.
It’s officially fireplace season, and we’ve got a list of places around town, both indoors and out, where you can settle in and stay warm. Have a peep here.

3 :: Celebrate Christmas in July
The whole mid-winter, second Chrissy thing has really taken off in the Illawarra lately and we’ll admit we’ve happily jumped on the sleigh ourselves.
Twice the merriment, jolliness and festive feasting in one year? What’s not to love!
For Yuletide celebrations with all the trimmings and none of the stress, have a look at these Christmas in July events popping up at fab venues across the Illawarra.
Any excuse for mulled wine, a delicious roast and pudding, we say!

4 :: Catch a show
An evening at the theatre is always a winner, especially when it’s warmer inside than out.
The Merrigong Theatre Company at the IPAC has a superb program all year round, from comedy and musicals to kid-friendly shows and more.
Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul is another well-loved spot for live entertainment, along with Wollongong Town Hall, The Vault in Port Kembla and Side Door Theatre.
Our directory has even more local venues so you can see who’s playing where and start planning your next night of live entertainment.

5 :: Cheer on your team
Footy season runs right through winter, which means a chance to cheer on the Dragons at WIN Entertainment Centre. Book your tix [we’re suckers for snagging a spot on the hill for some old-skool fun], don your jersey and get ready to watch the Red V run white hot.
The Wollongong Wolves Football Club also hit the field over winter, so the soccer fans are sorted too.
Whether the ball is round or oval, your team is playing so get down there and cheer them on!

6 :: Lookout for whales
We’ve already had reports that those beautiful blue majesties are making their way up the coastline, so now’s the time to lock eyes on a whale.
Head to lookouts like Hill 60, the Gerringong Whale Watching Platform, Minnamurra Headland, Sea Cliff Bridge or Bald Hill for some on-land viewing.
For front-row seats to the show, book a tour with Shellharbour Wild Cruises and head out to sea for some up close and personal time.

7 :: Have a romantic staycation or mini break
Book in at some local or nearby accommodation for a chance to snuggle up, get all cosy-wosy, and maybe enjoy some quiet time together.
A romantic mini-break close to home means less travel and more chances to relax, reconnect, and share some body heat on those wintry nights… wink-wink!
Here’s our guide for where to go nearby. It’s not just for the romantics among us, there are plenty of options for families or big groups if you’re looking for a getaway with the crew as well.

8 :: Explore a local gallery or museum
Add a touch of culture or learning to your life this winter at one of our local galleries and museums.
The Wollongong Art Gallery is a great place to start because there’s loads of artistic goodness to discover for all ages.
The Wentworth in Port Kembla is another cracking choice with plenty of different studio shops to poke your head in and have a mosy.
The HARS Aviation Museum is a must for all flight fanatics, The Australian Motorlife Museum is one for the rev-heads and the Early Start Discovery Space is a kiddos delight.
Loads more great galleries and museums here.

9 :: Become a bookworm
Winter’s the perfect time to pick up a reading habit. Blustery days, a couch, a cuppa and a good book? Sounds like bliss to us.
Local bookshops like Collins Booksellers Thirroul, The Bookshop Kiama, Society City, Ever After – The Romance Book Specialists, and Jennie’s Book Nook are perfect for building up that home library.
Or pop into your local library for a borrow. Our libraries also often host excellent events, talks, workshops and classes… so many ways to stay warm and entertained.

Yep, this list is sure to keep you in good spirits for the winter ahead.
And don’t forget to keep an eye on our socials and event directory for year-round fun.
