6 Gorgeous Swimming Holes in and Around the Illawarra

Take a break from the beach and a dip in one of these local swimming spots

We’ve got beaches coming out of the wazoo here in the Illawarra, and yep, they’re all pretty amazing. But we also love the idea of skipping the sand every once in a while, and going a little more bush.

It’s a whole new adventure to be had.

The journey to the perfect spot, the joy of finally finding it and that sense of relief you feel when dipping into those cool, calm and refreshing waters. Aaaah bliss!
Waterfalls, waterholes, creeks… You’ll discover some breathtaking hidden gems here in the Illawarra [and a bit beyond].

Blue Pool

Located inside Budderoo National Park which is a whole park heaving with gorgeous trails on its own.

Head up Jamberoo Mountain Road and take the Carrington Falls turn-off. Turn again when you see the ‘Blue Pool sign’ and you’ll come to a small car park. Park up and it’s time to get walking.
It’s actually only around a 50m walk to the hole so once you’re there find a nice big rock to plop your stuff on and head in to cool off. It’s a perfect spot for floating, chilling and just taking in the National Park vibes.

Heads up dogs are not allowed in the park so please leave the puppers at home.

Once you’re done in the pool if you’re still in the mood for some aquatic adventure we recommend staying in the area and walking on to….

Nellie’s Glenn

Not much further along the track, you’ll find another amaze-balls swimming spot. Nellie’s Glen is only a shallow pool so best to slowly make your way in and avoid jumping or diving. Getting into the pool can be a bit rocky so take your time as well.

If you’re lucky enough to be there in the middle of the day you’ll be able to really see that bluey-green tinge that gives both pools their Insta-famous look.

FUN FACT: According to the NSW National Parks website the canopy of the rainforest can act as a natural sunscreen, filtering out approximately 75% of direct sunlight. The cooler yet humid air makes it an ideal environment to escape the harsh summer sun. But be sure to still slip, slop, slap, seek and slide because the pool itself is pretty exposed to the sky.

Karloo Pool

The Karloo Walking track starts across from Heathcote station just to the North of our Illawarra region. This is an excellent spot to choose if you’re leaving the car at home and coming by public transport. Just keep in mind that trains usually run hourly so plan ahead. There is also parking near the beginning of the track.

From there it’s about a 40-minute walk to the Karloo pool itself. The walk is a moderate challenge with steps, some short steep spots and obstacles blocking the path here and there so wear sturdy shoes and come prepared.

This is quite a lovely-sized swimming spot with room to even do laps if you want to! It has a little waterfall running into it and be mindful it can get pretty busy on sunny weekends so midweek might be the go.

We reckon’ the walk down to the pool is a little easier than the walk back, so save some energy for your return trip.

Kingfisher pool

This one’s just north of Helensburgh, near Waterfall along the Bullawaring walking track.

To get here turn left onto Kooraban Street in Waterfall and then after that turn right onto Warabin Street. Find a spot to park at the end of Warabin Street and walk into the park via the sign for the Bullawaring walking track.

It’s a 30–40-minute walk to the pull and requires full energy, so you’ll be cheering when you come to those crisp, cool waters. There are tables at the picnic area right near the pool so you can bring lunch and make a day of it.

You can also camp for the night in the area but as it’s considered a remote backpack campground, you’ll need to carry everything in and out so this is one prob for the more seasoned campers amongst us.

Stokes Creek

Minerva Pool and Jingga Pool are both part of the Dharawal National Park and Stokes Creek. To get to both of them you have to go up past Appin and there is parking at the entrance gate on Victoria Road. From there you can take your pick of walking tracks with one leading to Jingga Pool and the other to Minerva Pool, it’s definitely possible to do both in one day.

Both pools hold special significance with the local Dharawal people and to respect the cultural importance of these sights they ask that only women and children enter Minerva Pool.

There are plenty of shady spots around the pools and Minerva Pool also has picnic tables to set your snacks on.

Flat Rock Waterhole

We love ourselves a day trip down to Kangaroo Valley all year round but especially in the warmer months when we can tie in a swim at Flat Rock Waterhole.

You’ll find this spot at the end of Upper River Rd, and it’s no hidden gem among locals. This means it can get pretty busy on sunny weekends, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, plan a midweek visit.

Here, you’ll find natural rock ledges and a massive swimming hole that’s about as big as a 25m pool. It’s pretty tucked away and there’s no mobile service- off the screen and into the green we say!

Remember, when taking a dip in these natural waters, you’re stepping into unmanaged swimming areas surrounded by bushland. Stay extra cautious and keep your surroundings in mind. Avoid diving headfirst into the water, and if you’re exploring upstream, it’s wise to wear shoes [like water shoes or an old pair of sneakers].

If you’re looking to stay coastal on your next swimming trip, sweet, check out our list of local beaches and ocean pools.

Let’s make the most of this long, hot summer ahead and discover one of these awesome swimming spots nearby to beat the heat. Happy dipping folks!
