Free Things To Do
1 :: Go for a seaside stroll
We’re pretty lucky to have all this oceanic goodness right on our doorstep, with loads of walking paths to soak it all up.
Here are a few we love:
Sea Cliff Bridge – It’s iconic for a reason.
The Blue Mile – Stunning views of Wollongong Harbour and the lighthouse.
Shellharbour Marina – Boardwalks and promenades winding right around the marina in Shell Cove.
Kiama Coast Walk – Nearly 20km of epic coastal views.
Thirroul to Bulli Bike Track – Flat and roomy, perfect for bikes, prams and wheelchairs.
Check out more awesome local walks here.
2 :: Wollongong Botanic Garden
It’s a little slice of nature, ideal for a free day out.
Wander through rainforest paths, spot duckies by the pond, hang out on the lawns, and let the kids run wild at the all-abilities playground. Make sure to snap a piccy on the Japanese bridge, then explore all the different plant collections.
The friendly crew at the Garden also put on regular free walking and buggy tours if you’re keen to learn even more about this wonderful place.
3 :: Wollongong Art Gallery
We genuinely adore the Wollongong Art Gallery for all the amazing [and free] exhibitions it puts on.
From celebrating historical art to championing up-and-coming creatives it’s a really dynamic space to easily lose a few hours in.
They also host regular talks, workshops, tours and kid-friendly activities that are no or low cost. Sooo good!
4 :: Nan Tien Temple
The largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere happens to be right here in the Illawarra, and entry doesn’t cost a cent.
Nan Tien Temple is a special spot with peaceful gardens to wander through, a lovely koi fish pond, and beautiful architecture at every turn.
Throughout the year, they also host cultural events that are worth learning more about.
5 :: Pool Hopping
Yeah we’ve got some of the best beaches around… but our local pools and rockpools hit pretty hard too!
Here’s a list of pools and rock pools all up and down the coast.
Heads up: Some council pools require a small entry fee.
6 :: Kiama Blowhole
It’s actually the world’s largest blowhole… so cool right?
To reeeeaaally see it working its magic we recommend paying a visit during high tide and when there’s a swell, usually during spring and autumn.
Don’t forget to show the Little Blowhole just south of Kiama town some love as well.
7 :: Visit The Library
There are 13 libraries across the Illawarra, filled with free books, resources and plenty of good stuff.
They’re not just for borrowing books either. Libraries often run fun and usually free events and activities throughout the year for all ages and interests.
There are plenty of reasons to pop in and check things out. Keep an eye on our events page for what’s coming up.
8 :: Get Historical
The Illawarra Museum is open Wednesdays + Sundays from 12 noon to 3.00pm and entry is free.
The Berry Museum is open Saturday, Sunday + Public Holidays plus Monday + Friday during school holidays.
If you’d prefer to take your historical knowledge on the run, check out the Kiama Heritage Walk or the Berry Historical Walk where you can learn more about each of these towns whilst getting out and about.
9 ::Parkrun
The running scene in the Illawarra is thriving! Not only do we have many top-notch local run clubs to join, there’s also 3 different locations hosting free parkruns weekly.
Check them out here:
Shellharbour parkrun
Fairy Meadow parkrun
Sandon Point Parkrun
10 :: Have A Picnic
Raid the fridge for all the leftovers, stuff ‘em in the basket, grab the blanket and head out to one of our local picnic spots. Find your perfect picnic place here.
Less Than $15
11 :: Minnamurra Rainforest
Whilst technically a visit to Minnamurra Rainforest is free, parking at the Visitors Centre will set you back a whole $12. Sounds like the perfect excuse to round up three pals and split the cost four ways.
Worth every cent for those waterfall views.
12 :: Play Some Trivia
Loads of pubs and clubs host free trivia nights around town throughout the week. Just rustle up a tenner or so for a bevvie [even better if it’s happy hour] and spend the night testing your knowledge with your pals.
Here’s a link to our event directory for local trivia nights.
13 :: Have A Cheap Feed
Fill your tummy without emptying the bank account. Here’s our roundup of 10 fab lunches all for under 10 smackeroos. Nom, nom, nom.
14 :: Catch A Flick
The Gala Cinema in Warrawong has $10 tickets every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for all sessions. You can catch recent blockbusters alongside cool international picks, local films and arty indie stuff.
15 :: Groove To A Gig
Local and out-of-town acts hit the stage at venues all over town, usually for free. Head to our event directory to see who’s playing and where.
We always find a bit of cash for a drink or a cheap bite while we’re there. It’s a small way to support the awesome venues putting on the shows.
