How One Local Is Creating Spaces For Women To Connect On The Sapphire Coast

When 25-year-old Ebony Craigie moved from Melbourne to the Sapphire Coast in late 2023, she found herself in a position many newcomers can relate to. She was starting fresh in a new town, with family nearby but very few social connections of her own.

“I really struggled to meet people,” Ebony says. “There weren’t many social events or opportunities to connect with like-minded women, so after a year of living in Merimbula I decided to create one myself.”

With no experience in event planning, Ebony connected with Little Alice in Merimbula and her first event was born. Not expecting a strong reaction, she was shocked when around 30 showed up.

“It was nerve-wracking, but I reminded myself that everyone was there for the same reason: to connect, feel safe, and have fun.”

That night set the tone for something much bigger. Since then, Ebony’s events have grown into a regular part of the Sapphire Coast social calendar, attracting up to 100 women at venues like Little Alice, Nine Circles, Dulcies, Kitty’s, and now the brand-new venue at Robyn’s Nest, called Lakeside.

“These events are about creating a safe, welcoming space where women can make new friends, dress up, dance, enjoy delicious food and cocktails, and celebrate each other.” she explains. “The most rewarding part has been seeing the friendships form. At my very first event, a group of women all met for the first time- by the next event, they were already a close circle.”

Alongside her events, Ebony works in Disability Support and is passionate about inclusion. She helped establish the All Abilities Football Team at Pambula Football Club, which has grown rapidly since its launch in early 2025. She has also organised inclusive speed dating events and is currently planning an All Abilities Silent Disco.

“My brother has Cerebral Palsy, so creating spaces where everyone feels welcome is really close to my heart,” she says.

Running these gatherings keeps Ebony busy outside of her full-time work, but the friendships, connections, and sense of community they bring make it all worthwhile.

“Looking ahead, my hope is that more and more women will get involved, step outside their comfort zone, and use these events as a space to connect, laugh, and feel part of something special.”
