DATE NIGHT // The Fold’s Guide To Romance On The Sapphire Coast

SHARE

Whip out the calendars, organise the babysitter [or puppy-sitter] and maybe even pull out your best threads because it’s time to book yourselves a date night.

Whether it’s been forever or it’s just a regular thing to shake off the busy grind, we love getting together with our special someone to catch up, relax, or even finally make the move from soft-launch to hard-launch.

Wherever you are in your coupling, we’ve put together this guide to help you set the scene.

1 // Romantic Dinner

It’s a classic for a reason, and bonding over good food and drinks never goes out of style.

For that, we recommend booking a table at Umi-Ko Izakaya in Merimbula.

Forget France being the country of love. Japan has some pretty sweet moves too, especially with all the mouthwatering dishes at this Japanese eatery.

From delicate bites like kingfish sashimi and agedashi tofu to steaming bowls of flavour-packed tonkotsu, chicken, and even vegan ramen, there’s plenty of deliciousness to enjoy together.

Think Lady and the Tramp style noodle slurping, only with noodles coated in umami goodness… naaaw!

Add one of their amazing cocktails to the mix, and you’ve got the recipe for romance sorted.

Umi-Ko Izakaya is open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 pm until late, and booking in advance is a great way to show your date how organised you are while avoiding disappointment.

They also offer takeaway for a cosy night in.

2 // Drinks And A Movie

If you’re looking for something relaxed yet still special, a movie night with a delicious cocktail or two, either before or after, is always a winner in our books.

The Picture Show Man in Merimbula shows an excellent mix of blockbuster films mixed with indie and international movies as well. So, there’s something for every type of cinephile.

Check out our list of spots to sip a cocktail on the Sapphire Coast for that pre/post-film tipple. Munching on popcorn is thirsty work after all!

3 // Live Music

We’re always down for catching a local gig, and bopping along with our significant other is a fun way to spend a date night.

Venues like Longstocking Brewery, Club Sapphire, Merimbula RSL and Great Southern Inn host live music most weekends.

Or, for something a little unique, catch a show at Four Winds Venue. This one-of-a-kind space lets you groove along in nature to a diverse mix of acts, from avant-garde jazz to classical Persian and so much more.

Check out this year’s program to find out what’s happening and when.

4 // Bowl ‘Em Over

Nothing like a bit of friendly competition to keep the spark alive. A classic round of smash the pins is always a good time, so grab a pair of those oh-so-stylish bowling shoes and go for a bowl at Top Fun in Merimbula. If your significant other can love you in those shoes, they’re definitely a keeper.

Top Fun also has putt-putt and arcade games to keep the old-school fun going, and maybe even win your sweetheart a soft toy in the claw machines. Cute!

If you prefer to do it bare… footed, that is… ahem!

Club Sapphire has barefoot bowls every afternoon from 4 pm. Club Bega, Tathra Beach Bowling Club, Eden Sports & Recreation Club, and Tura Beach Country Club also let you have a game sans shoes.

5 // Get Arty

Take advantage of our creative community by spending an evening getting artsy with your love.

SECCA [South East Centre for Contemporary Art] hosts a range of different art events and workshops throughout the year, including create & sips, open drawing sessions and even ‘art at night’ where the gallery is open after hours for some evening exploration.

Check out our directory for other classes and workshops happening along the Sapphire Coast, from pottery classes [that’s one way to get your hands dirty…wahey!] to life drawing and many other ideas.

6 // Staycation

Get away without actually getting away by booking yourselves into some local accommodation.

Luxury glamping at Currajong Retreat is major romance goals. Your own safari tent with an outdoor bath, stunning views, and a log fire. Hey Alexa, play Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden because we are swooning!

We’ve also got heart eyes for Tanja Lagoon Camp, Harbour View House and Heritage House Eden, plus other accommodation options here.

7 // Go Home

Instead of heading out, why not stay in?

Pack the kidlets off to the grandies and treat yourselves to a feast of delicious pre-made dishes from local caterers and foodie businesses.

Grab a bottle of tipple [or two] from a local brewery, distillery or winery, and don’t forget a take-home tub of gelato from Bianchini Gelati in Pambula or Bermagui Gelati Clinic. Gotta have something sweet for your sweet!

So there you go, lovers.

Here’s to romance all over the Sapphire Coast!

Mwah.
