Prepare your soil
After winter, your soil will be ready for some love. Clear away fallen leaves, weeds, and old mulch. Work in some compost or aged manure, and if it’s been a while, do a pH test- our local soils tend to run a little acidic.
Prune
Now’s the time to prune deciduous fruit trees and any winter-flowering plants. Keep those tools sharp to minimise damage and help your plants bounce back strong.
Mulch
Once the beds are clean, add a fresh layer of mulch. It improves soil health, holds in moisture, and keeps spring weeds under control.
Fertilise
Winter can leave the soil a bit depleted. Give your plants a nutrient boost with an organic fertiliser or liquid seaweed to kickstart healthy growth.
Planting time
Early Spring: beetroot, carrots, lettuce, silverbeet, asparagus crowns.
Mid to Late Spring (after frosts): tomatoes, eggplants, capsicum, zucchini, beans, cucumbers.
Succession planting of quick growers like lettuce and carrots will keep your harvest going well into summer.
Community Gardens
