Visit in person, first
It might sound obvious but if you’re considering a move to the Sapphire Coast, why not take a weekend getaway to test the waters? Exploring the area beforehand is a great way to see if it feels like home. Whether you’re after a rural escape in places like Bega and Candelo, a coastal adventure in Bermagui, Tathra, Merimbula or Eden, or a mix of both in Pambula, each spot has its own unique charm. Get out of the car, take a wander, grab a coffee, spark up a chat with a local, and soak in the vibe of your potential new community!
Do your research
Local visitor information centres and councils are a great first step. Ask for any local contacts you could speak with and help you connect with and get to know the community.
If you’re not proficient in English, Here 2 Help is a collaboration between TAFE NSW Bega and the Bega Valley Shire Library. The program offers a drop-in service at Tura Marrang Library & Community Centre with one-on-one tuition for literacy and numeracy needs.
There is also a Multicultural Bulk Loan service that allows you to borrow several books at one time, in up to 43 community languages, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) resources.
Choose a town that’s right for you
Bermagui, the northernmost town on the Sapphire Coast, is a tight-knit community with a deep appreciation for the ocean and a strong sense of togetherness. With beautiful swimming spots, a picturesque harbour, and the stunning Mount Gulaga as its backdrop, Bermagui offers a serene coastal lifestyle.
Bega, the bustling (and largest) hub of the valley, is perfect if you’re looking for a town that has everything you need without the big city rush. Known for its famous Bega Cheese, it has the valley’s only large shopping centre, and essential services and facilities like the Bega Hospital, council offices, library, and SECCA.
Tathra feels like a classic holiday destination from childhood, with breathtaking views, a laid-back atmosphere, a patrolled beach, and a pub perched on the headland that makes its own brew.
If you’re drawn to the charm of rolling hills and dairy country, Candelo might be the perfect fit. This close-knit, creative community is home to the Candelo Village Festival, a vibrant biennial event run by the Candelo Arts Society.
If coastal living with more amenities sounds appealing, Merimbula is a great option. With a vibrant foodie scene, family-friendly playgrounds, scenic walks, and beautiful beaches, it offers a small-town feel without sacrificing on services, including an airport.
Pambula perfectly blends country charm with coastal living. Just minutes from the beach, it’s known for some of the best coffee in the region, including the beloved Wild Ryes Bakery. With a bustling main street and a warm, welcoming community, Pambula is a vibrant spot to call home.
Lastly, Eden, a picturesque sea port, is a hidden gem with stunning coastal views that make it feel like a little slice of paradise.
The Bega Valley Shire Council website is also a great reference source.

Acknowledging Country
When moving to a new area, it’s important to understand and acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land, their rich cultural, historical, and spiritual ties to the area. Acknowledging Country is a way to demonstrate respect to the Traditional Owners and custodians of the place you want to call home. Paying respect to their connection with the land honours their enduring stewardship and helps foster a sense of community, respect, and reconciliation. This recognition also ensures that we appreciate the significance of the land’s heritage and contribute to preserving its stories for future generations.
The Sapphire Coast lies within the Country of the Yuin-Monaro Nations with three mountains – Biamanga (Mumbulla), Gulaga (Mt. Dromedary) and Balawan (Mt. Imlay). These mountains are of deep significance to the Yuin people and their descendants. They are used today for ceremony and teaching.
The groups of the Yuin communities include the Djiringanj, Thaua and Ngarigo people.

Volunteer
Volunteering when you’re new to an area is a great way to get involved in the community and meet new people quickly. Plus, you’ll be giving back and making a positive impact while building lasting local connections.
Join local Facebook groups
Joining local Facebook community groups can be incredibly useful when moving to a new area. These groups can help provide insights and recommendations and can offer a peek into what’s on the communities minds. If you’re yet to move, be prepared that you might not be accepted to join but if you are a new local, it’s a great shortcut to connecting with your neighbours and community, asking questions, and getting advice.
Always keep your swimmers handy!
We’re a water obsessed bunch here on the Sapphire Coast. We love nothing more than a coffee and a chinwag on the beach or an excuse to dive in – SUPing, kayaking, snorkelling, or sampling fresh oysters – you’ll always want to have your cossie and towel at the ready!
