The Berida Hotel, a place full of history, charm, and loads of interesting stories, celebrates its 100th anniversary… WOAH!

From a family home to a wartime convalescent spot, a children’s retreat, and now a boutique hotel, Berida Hotel has been at the heart of Bowral life for a whole century.

So come raise a virtual [or literal, you do you] glass to this Bowral beauty with us!

From Family Home To Community Hub

Berida Hotel’s story begins way back in 1925, not as a hotel, actually, but as a private residence. One Mr Ambrose William Freeman built a grand family home for his wife, Dr. Jessie Strahorn Aspinall, and their four kiddos.

It was a gorgeous family home on three acres, just mins from the centre of Bowral. When Mr. Freeman passed away, Jessie decided to give it to the Australian Red Cross in 1941… which we think is a pretty amazing move.

By 1943, Berida had turned into a convalescent home for soldiers coming back from World War II, giving them a place to rest, recover, and feel looked after.

Later, it changed again, this time into a children’s retreat, still a place for safety and welcome. Even back then, Berida Hotel’s famous warmth and charm were already at its heart.

Step Back In Time... Then & Now

How Berida Became A Southern Highlands Icon

Over the years, Berida grew from a family manor into a place people genuinely love to visit.

And why wouldn’t they?

There’s just so much to love.

Not only is there that stunner of a building or those absolutely gorgeous gardens, there’s the feeling you get when you walk through the doors, friendly, welcoming, and yet super special.

And plenty of folks have experienced that one-of-a-kind Berida Magic, from famous cook Margaret Fulton who added her touch, as well as other high-profile guests, including dignitaries, Prime Ministers, Governor Generals, Government Ministers, and even a Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting.

Elegant lounge with plush blue-green velvet chairs, marble tables, and a grand chandelier. Large windows and a regal ambiance enhance the cozy, upscale atmosphere.

A Local Family Era

Today, a local family are the proud, private owners of the Berida Hotel. Over the past ten years, they’ve lovingly restored Berida to keep its historic beauty while adding a modern, European-inspired feeling.

New additions like the Health Club, Bathhouse, and Art Gallery complement perfectly with the hotel’s unique Highlands style.

The family truly believes that every guest who passes through leaves a mark on Berida’s story. So your quick weekend away, family gathering, or celebratory dinner means so much to them.

The hotel is living history, and this family makes sure every chapter feels fresh and welcoming.

Places To Chill, Eat, And Sip At Berida Hotel

The Entryway

As the saying goes, first impressions count, and Berida Hotels’ entryway sets the tone wonderfully. It’s been refreshed to feel light and inviting while keeping its old-school grandeur. You’ll even spy bits of the original gold wallpaper sneaking through, a little nod to the past that we ADORE!

Aspinalls Bar & Lounge

Named after the original owner, Jessie Strahorn Aspinall, Aspinalls is where you head to kick back with a drinky.

With an exciting menu of cocktails, tons of different whiskies to try, and of course, champagne, it’s a really top-notch place to hang out.

There’s even a Happy Hour which runs from 5–6pm 7 days a week, but heads up, it fills fast, so get in early!

Bistro Sociale

We can’t talk about Berida Hotel without raving about Bistro Sociale. It has always been the heart of the hotel, and it used to be a more traditional dining room, but now it’s a bright, welcoming space with a modern European twist.

It’s excellent for catching up over a meal, celebrating with friends, and enjoying some utterly divine dining!

We’re talking dishes like pan-seared scallops, confit duck, a mouthwatering French steakhouse range, Prix Fixe lunch specials, plus so much more…. drool!

Deluxe King Rooms

It is sooooo nice to spend a night/multiple nights at Berida Hotel.

As you expect, the bedrooms mix that legendary history with total comfort.

The soft blue tones of each room keep things calm and relaxing, but the classic touches remind you that Berida has been around for 100 years.

It’s ideal for visitors winding down after exploring Bowral or the Highlands, and also a great option for locals looking for a luxury stay-cay.

A Century Of Stories

Berida Hotel is full of special stories.

Guests have laughed, celebrated, reflected, and relaxed here for generations.

You can curl up by the fire in the Guest Lounge, grab a drink on the terrace surrounded by gardens, browse local goodies in the store, or dine at Bistro Sociale

There’s even a Health Club and tennis courts if you’re keen to get a little movement in.

And the location is fantastic too.

Just a short drive from Sydney, Canberra, and the South Coast for any out-of-towners and right in the heart of Bowral to boot.

A Classic With A Modern Twist

What makes Berida Hotel so unique is how it balances history and modern life.

Historical goodness right next to fresh design, smart upgrades, and little experiences that make a stay feel personal.

Every hallway, lounge, and dining spot has a story, and the hotel manages to feel both timeless and current at the same time.

After 100 years, Berida Hotel is still a place to slow down, take a breather, and soak up the Highlands.

Romantic weekend, quick getaways, and even work trips are catered for.

Berida Hotel is a combo of luxury, loveliness, and a real sense of local community.
