Best Swimming Spots in the Southern Highlands: Natural Waterholes, Waterfalls & Rivers

Finding the spot is usually an adventure in itself, and when you find it… it’s hard to top how refreshing it is to swim in natural waters.

SHARE

When the weather heats up, there’s nothing better than finding a hidden swimming spot and diving into cool, crystal-clear water. The Southern Highlands is full of stunning natural swimming holes, sparkling waterfalls, and winding rivers that make you forget the heat in an instant. Some spots are perfect for families with little ones, while others are secret hideaways just begging for a bit of adventure. Grab your towel, pack some snacks, and get ready to discover the best local places to splash around this summer.

Budderoo National Park – Carrington Falls & Blue Pool

If you love waterfalls and waterholes, Budderoo National Park is a must. Carrington Falls is the star of the show, and getting there is half the fun. Drive through Robertson on the Illawarra Highway, turn right onto Jamberoo Mountain Road past the Robertson Pie Shop, and follow the signs to the park.

Blue Pool is just a short, easy walk from the campground. It’s perfect for floating on a lilo, soaking up the sun, and cooling off in calm, clear water.

Keep exploring a little further, and you’ll find Nellies Glen, a tiny waterfall tucked into the bush, and the top of Carrington Falls, with rock pools and mini waterfalls that are as beautiful as they are fun. These spots can get busy on hot days, so arrive early or be prepared for a short walk from the car.

Fold Tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy either pre or post dip.

Berrima River Reserve

If you’re after a family-friendly spot, the Berrima River Reserve is perfect. Just a short walk from Berrima Village along Oxley Street, this stretch of river is calm, cool, and perfect for kids to splash around. Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenic surrounds, or explore the historic Berrima River Walk while you’re there.

Fold Tip: Dogs are welcome too!

Forty Foot Falls, Mittagong

For a mini adventure, head to Forty Foot Falls just outside Mittagong. Access is via Box Vale Road, across the Hume Highway from Welby. The walk to the falls is mostly easy, with just a few steps down at the end, taking less than an hour return. At the bottom, there are beautiful waterholes perfect for a refreshing dip after your trek. This one’s great for older kids and adventurous families, but maybe skip it with little ones.

Kangaroo Valley

If venturing on a little road trip is your thing, heading down to Kangaroo Valley is the perfect solution on a hot day! Grab an icecream at the lolly shop in town and check out these two spots…

Kangaroo Valley – Under Hampden Bridge & Flat Rock

A little road trip never hurts on a hot day, and Kangaroo Valley delivers. Under the Hampden Bridge, there’s a big sandy bank ideal for families. The water flows gently, and head upstream to discover a large, 70-metre pool for a more adventurous swim.

Flat Rock, at the end of Upper River Road, is a favourite among locals. It’s a secluded spot with natural rock ledges and a massive swimming hole as big as a 25-metre pool. Upstream, the Olympic Pools offer even more breath-taking spots to cool off.

Fold Tip: Natural swimming spots aren’t maintained, so always watch kids, wear shoes when scrambling over rocks, and never dive headfirst.

Why Swimming in the Southern Highlands Rocks

Swimming in these natural spots isn’t just about cooling off, it’s about adventure, exploring the bush, and discovering hidden gems you’ll want to return to again and again. Some are perfect for a quick dip, others for a full-day adventure with picnics, snacks, and floating around on a lilo.

If the idea of bush swimming isn’t your vibe, don’t worry! There are plenty of local pools and nearby beaches too.

The Southern Highlands is brimming with swimming spots that are cool, refreshing, and utterly gorgeous. This summer, make a splash, explore the bush, and discover the local swimming gems you’ve been missing!
