Meet this local artist drawing inspiration from nature and fellow, local creatives

With a lifelong love of art and a teaching career now drawing to a close, local artist Julia Abbey has more time to work on her beautiful, colourful pieces, hosting workshops and displaying her art in regional galleries [Moree Gallery will be displaying Julia’s work from March].

We caught up with Julia for a quick chat about life in the Southern Highlands as a Highlands Creative.

1 :: How did you become an artist?

I have always had a love of art and as a primary school teacher, and I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in art in schools.

However, now as my career draws to a close I have found time to work on my own projects.

2 :: Who or what are your biggest influences or inspiration?

I draw a lot of inspiration from Kate Vella from Robertson who I completed a course with.

I love her work and she has always been so generous with her advice and support.

I’m really looking forward to her upcoming exhibition in Berrima.

I use acrylic paint on stretched canvas.

4 :: What are your plans for the future?

I would love to paint every day!

I would also like to grow my following @juliaabbey.art on Instagram and create ideas for new pieces.

I enjoy being in nature for inspiration, as I use an Australia native flower and native bird in every picture.

Painting is such a wonderful, mindful activity which I hope to do well into the future.

5 :: Why do you love being an artist in the Southern Highlands?

The Southern Highlands is full of creative people who inspire me.

The environment is peaceful and the room in my house where I paint looks onto fields, pastures and the Gib which feels so tranquil.

I often wander around Dirty Janes when I’m looking for new inspiration and objects to paint in my pieces.
