Angus Murray, a regular on the Southern Highlands music scene, has been keeping locals entertained for years with gigs at local venues and sharing the stage at FireAid2020 with John Waters and Leo Sayer, to the launch of his album Beauty & Grace.
We caught up with Angus to find out what life as a local muso is really like. Can’t wait to see him back on stage again!!
1 // What was the first instrument you picked up and how old were you?
The first instrument I learnt to ‘play’ was my voice. Yes, believe it or not – the voice is definitely an instrument (actually one of the most complex in fact). I was about 6 or 7 years old.
2 // Has music always been the chosen career for you? What sort of music do you love playing, singing and writing?
Most definitely, I’ve always wanted to have a job that involves music. I love writing and also playing music that can get people dancing, but can still deliver a universal and relatable message.
3 // Who has been your biggest musical influence?
I’ve had various influences over the years. Although at the moment I’m really loving Jacob Collier, Steely Dan and John Mayer.
4 // Tell us about your favourite gig you’ve done in the Highlands?
I would say my ‘favourite gig’ is less of an actual event – and more of a type of gig. The type of gig where the music is thoroughly enjoyed but also respected. I’ve had many gigs around the Highlands in the past that have embodied these attributes such as FireAid 2020, Songwriters in the Round @ T·Guitars and my ‘Beauty & Grace’ album launch at The Royal Hotel just to name a few…
5 // What do you love about living in the Highlands and the local music scene?
I love where I live in the Southern Highlands because it is quiet and peaceful. I also really appreciate the open spaces that we are fortunate enough to have surrounding our towns.
For me, the Highlands music scene has always been consistent, filled with live cover bands and artists at local venues every weekend. I’m looking forward to things opening up again so we can get back to playing live and local!
