If you’re like us, the first thing you do when you hear about a business is google them and check out their website. It’s basically the modern-day version of window shopping.
That’s why having a solid website isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s essential.
And when it comes to creating websites that are both beautiful and functional, friendly local Jillian Brandon from Manifest Website Design has it down to a fine art.
We sat down with her to chat about her journey, her work, what makes a website stand out, and of course, her love for the Southern Highlands.

1 // Hi Jillian, tell us how you came to be in the Highlands.
I grew up on a farm in Victoria, lived in Sydney for a while, and moved to the Southern Highlands 24 years ago. I was drawn to the space and greenery here, and I absolutely love it.
2 // How did you get into website design and marketing?
I have a background in IT. I studied a Bachelor of Computer Science at university. After that I worked in IT, mostly in the finance sector, doing things like stock exchange and stockbroking.
I’ve always been creative, however, so when I took some time off to have kids, I discovered website creation.
It was this perfect combination of creative and technical, and it just felt natural.
I started my business about 16 years ago and haven’t looked back since.
3 // We bet the world of website building was very different 16 years ago.
Oh, it definitely was! Back then, I was coding everything from scratch. It took forever!
This was long before web content management systems.
Now, things like WordPress have opened up so many possibilities for people with the right skills.
I also help clients set up shopping platforms like Shopify, tailoring everything to their needs. It’s amazing how far the tools have come.

4 // Can you tell us about a local business you’ve worked with?
One example is LotusMagic, a fabulous local toy and gift shop.
They were using a mix of platforms, including Shopify, but needed more than Shopify could offer.
They also wanted unique touches, like an adorable little bee cursor on their site.
We used WordPress to achieve that and integrated Shopify into it. It’s all about creating excellent usability and making sure the platforms work seamlessly together.

5 // What services does Manifest Website Design offer?
Our main focus is website design, SEO, and marketing. We also set up customer relationship management [CRM] systems. These are tailored to each business.
For example, one CRM we offer is a product called ‘Phone Central,’ which sends an automated text back to missed calls. It’s a game-changer for businesses like tradies who can’t always answer their phones.
One of my clients said this system helped them pick up 30 more jobs a month!
6 // Amazing! Your services are improving businesses in so many ways!
We’re all about solving problems, whether it’s managing inquiries or setting up invoicing, so businesses can run more smoothly.
Every business is unique, so we make sure our systems are tailored to fit their specific needs.
For example, with a local water filter business, we set up a system to send reminders via email and text a year after purchase, prompting customers to order a replacement filter. It’s a win for both the business owner and the customer.
These kinds of systems offer incredible value and provide a great return on investment.
7 // What’s the process of building a website like?
It starts with a call or meeting to understand a client’s goals and how they want their website to work.
We do a lot of research and create plenty of content because that’s how Google finds websites and connects them to customers.
We focus on the user of the website, i.e. the customer. We create an image of who they are, what they look like, where they hang out etc. We design the site with that in mind.
A good website builds trust, so it needs to look great, load fast, and work perfectly. We also host and maintain sites for our clients, keeping them secure and performing well.
Training is another part of what we do. For simple tasks like updating a page, we record personalised videos during meetings so clients can refer back to them. And for clients who prefer a hands-off approach, we offer maintenance plans where we handle everything, from plugins to updates to adding products.
8 // What have you learned along the way about what makes a website really work?
We’ve learned over the years that a pretty website isn’t enough. It needs to attract the right audience, and that’s where SEO comes in.
We use analytics to figure out what’s working, optimise it, and keep adapting as things change. It’s a craft you have to hone constantly.
9 // How do you make sure the website is meeting the client’s goals at every stage?
We stay in touch with clients throughout the process to make sure we’re on the right track. After the initial meeting, we send over a detailed plan and make sure it aligns with their business goals. We’re always checking in to make sure the design and content are shaping up the way they imagined.

10 // Any advice for local businesses wanting to improve their online presence?
First, make sure you have a Google Business Profile. It’s free and incredibly important.
Keep it optimised and accurate. For example, update it with holiday hours or add your social media links. Little details like that make a big difference.
Also, check your website regularly. Think of it like servicing your car. If it starts to look outdated or isn’t maintained, it could stop working or even get hacked. That’s why our maintenance care plans are so valuable.
.
11 // What about getting verified as a business on Google, we’ve heard it can be tough?
Be patient! Don’t rush it. Take your time to get established, ensure all your details are accurate, and then work on verification.
While you’re waiting for verification, make sure your website is polished, and your social media profiles are active. Fill out as much information as possible on your Google Business Profile and keep it up-to-date.
Photos, business hours, and service descriptions all help, so the profile looks great to both Google and customers.
12 // And you know we’re gonna ask, what do you love about the Southern Highlands?
Box Vale Track!
I love bushwalking, yoga, meditation, and gardening, and the Highlands is perfect for all of those things. Yoga and meditation really clear my mind and help me focus on the right ideas.

It’s clear Jillian brings such a unique blend of creativity and tech to everything she does.
