Every Can Counts With NSW Recyclers Raising $100K For Guide Dogs

NSW recyclers have already turned one million bottles and cans into $100,000 in donations, which is enough to fund two fully trained Guide Dogs. Now it’s the Southern Highlands’ turn to make a difference.

NSW recyclers have already turned one million bottles and cans into $100,000, which is enough to fund two fully trained Guide Dogs. Now it’s the Southern Highlands’ turn to get involved.

Across the state, Return and Earn NSW and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT are showing that everyday recycling can do something extraordinary. Their six-month appeal aims to raise $175,000, enough to fund four fully trained guide dogs for people living with low vision or blindness.

Thanks to NSW recyclers, over $100,000 has already been raised, covering the cost to breed, raise, and train two life-changing guide dogs. Now it’s up to the Southern Highlands community to help fund the next two.

Community Milestone: Two Guide Dogs Funded

Thanks to the generosity of NSW recyclers, the campaign has already hit an exciting milestone! Enough has been raised to fund two life-changing guide dogs.

Jaynie Moloney, Community Engagement Manager for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, said:

“Thanks to the generosity of NSW recyclers, enough has been raised to fund two life-changing guide dogs. Now we’re excited to see the Southern Highlands community join in to help fund the next two.”

The message is clear: there’s still more to do, and the Southern Highlands can play a huge part. Danielle Smalley, CEO of Exchange for Change, explains exactly why the next stretch of the campaign matters:

“The money raised through this campaign gives people living with low vision the tools and support needed to safely and confidently navigate their communities. We encourage everyone in the Southern Highlands to get involved and help us reach our $175,000 target.”

Behind the Scenes: The Puppy Development Team

Creating a guide or assistance dog is a big job. Each dog costs around $50,000 to breed, raise, and train. A huge part of this comes from Puppy Raiser volunteers, who care for and socialise the puppies, helping them develop the skills and confidence they’ll need for formal training.

The Puppy Development Team explains that these dogs provide invaluable support, helping individuals gain independence, confidence, and freedom in their daily lives. Their impact extends beyond mobility, offering reassurance and support that truly changes lives for both the individual and their family.

How You Can Make a Difference

It couldn’t be simpler. Every bottle, can, or carton is worth 10 cents, and donations can be made in a few taps through the Return and Earn app.

Visit any of the 600+ Return and Earn points across NSW, or pop by a local Southern Highlands spot and every container you return helps fund the next guide dog.

Guide Dogs client Tony shares just how life-changing it is:

“When my vision deteriorated, my world was turned upside down. Guide Dogs completely changed my life and helped increase my confidence, freedom, and independence, ultimately giving me my life back. “I cannot thank the people who donate and support us enough, it’s an amazing gift and without fundraising initiatives like this Solo wouldn’t be possible. It’s incredible to think something as simple as recycling a bottle can add up to something truly life changing.”

Why It Matters

Recycling isn’t just good for the planet, it can literally change lives. Every bottle, can, or carton helps fund guide dogs who give people with low vision freedom, confidence, and independence, while giving their families peace of mind and support.
