We couldn’t be more excited to cheer for Peter Doris, named the 2025 Highlands Hero. And wow, what a journey!
Peter emigrated from Ireland to Australia in the 70s, settling in Sydney where he raised his family and began volunteering with St Vincent de Paul. In 2010, he moved to the Southern Highlands, and the rest, as they say, is history.
From his very first stint volunteering in 1995, Peter has quietly become a powerhouse of generosity, heart, and leadership. Fast forward to today, and he’s leading over 400 volunteers across six regions, including our own Southern Highlands. Talk about making an impact!
“Peter is empathetic, patient, and committed,” says Kelly McCrohon, St Vincent de Paul Schools & Youth Engagement Officer. “He’s an active participant in charitable service while mentoring members to develop their talents and capabilities.”
Peter’s reach is everywhere! From Creative Space and the Bowral Youth Refuge to Southern Highlands Homeless Services. Last year alone, he helped provide $147,000 in food and material assistance to 700 people in our region. Incredible, right?
“To me, community is an extension of family,” Peter says. “Volunteering gives you a great sense of pride and responsibility.”
Jenny Bott, Chair of the Southern Highlands Community Foundation, puts it perfectly: “Peter epitomises a Highlands Hero. He’s shown great leadership, mentoring volunteers, and making a real impact both locally and beyond.”
Peter will put the $5,000 Highlands Hero grant to good use, splitting it between Mittagong, Bowral, and Moss Vale Conferences, to fund food assistance for those who need it most.
Peter’s unwavering dedication and big heart remind us why volunteering is so powerful. Peter, we’re over the moon to celebrate you! What an absolute legend!
“To me, community is an extension of family. It’s very important to take part and get to know your community, your neighbours and lend a hand where you can,” Peter said.
We couldn’t agree more.
