A Guide To Buying Fresh Produce In The Southern Highlands

Where to buy your fresh produce – fruit, veggies, bread, meat, cheese and wine! – and support local, small businesses in the Southern Highlands.
SHARE

We’re huge advocates for supporting small businesses, you guys know that!

And we’re so lucky to have so many local butchers, bakers, grocers, providores and farmers that are keeping our pantries and fridges well-stocked.

Keep supporting these small, family owned businesses – these guys have been there for us forever and are pretty darn passionate about what they do!

BUTCHERS & DELICATESSENS

The thing we love about our local butchers is that many of them either run their own cattle locally or source their meat from local or surrounding areas. That’s why the quality is so good.

Maugers Meats sell 100% grass fed lamb and beef that has been sustainably raised right here in the Southern Highlands. You can even order it online and have it delivered to you. And if you haven’t already, swing by their flagship store in Bowral that recently got a revamp – looks fab!

Mae Hill Farm opened their stylish looking butchery in 2022 and are serving up fantastic paddock to plate goods, including monthly meat boxes delivered to your door.

And Helen of Mumma’s Country Kitchen in the Robertson Cheese Factory has a fridge stocked full of beef raised on her own farm just 7 minutes from Robertson. How local is that?

And local deli’s are awesome for stocking up on a variety of smoked meats and cold cuts [and many have yummo cheeses on offer too!].

BAKERS

There is nothing better than freshly baked bread: the smell, the softness, the taste, the carbs…..! Wait. Oh, who cares about carbs? When it’s freshly baked the carbs don’t count, right?

Mouthwater Foods microbakery in Moss Vale are serving up award winning sourdough daily.

The What If Society is not only baking and serving up delicious bread, they’re also teaching locals how to make their own.

Head to Moonacres Kitchen, another local favourite for fresh, warrrrrmmmm, crusty bread just begging for a dollop of butter.

Here’s a list of bakeries in the Highlands so you can stock up on all the freshly baked goodness and maybe get yourself a sweet treat while you’re there – hello custard tart!

There are lots of places to pick up fresh fruit + veggies and delicious pantry staples. Here’s a list!

A shout out to the local fresh fruit + veggie stores. So many of them stock produce from farms in the Highlands and surrounding areas. Great for the viability of our amazing farmers.

Don’t forget you can head to The Source Bulk Foods  in Springett’s Arcade to stock up on pantry staples [and choccies!] too.
Oh, and lots of local cafes sell coffee beans too, so check in with your local barista when you’re there picking up your takeaway coffee!

Our local markets are a great source of fresh produce, homemade pantry items and lots more. Keep an eye on our Markets in the Southern Highlands article to stay up to date with which markets are on and when.

A number of local farmers also have subscription boxes available – check out Duck Foot Farm and Mother Tree Farm.

There are also some lovely farmgate stalls like Mount Lebanon Produce in Burrawang around the traps too. Stop if you see one and load up!

VILLAGE STORES

We have so many gorgeous villages tucked away in the Highlands, and most of them have a general store that keep those villages ticking over with fresh food – many of it sourced and made locally!

And it’s a great way to save yourself a drive into the bigger towns.

BOOZE!

We have lots of fabulous cellar doors, breweries and distilleries on our doorstep. Support our local wine, beer and spirit producers by buying direct from their cellar doors. Lots of them have online options too, which means it gets delivered to your door! Fab!

And there are lots of local bottle shops and specialty liquor stores that not only have a huge range of international wines and bevvies available to buy, but stock local deliciousness too.

So, there you go!

Support local and keep your fridge and pantry stocked up with awesome Highlands goodness!
