We love a good cult following. And the turmeric latte trend has our attention. All the cool kids have been drinking them for a while now, and they are officially mainstream in The Highlands, with a number of our local cafes offering the “golden milk” coffee.
The bright golden coloured drink has been treasured in Indian families for centuries. Its rise in popularity is likely due to health benefits associated with the key ingredient – turmeric. We checked in with local nutritionist Kylie Bucich to see what all the fuss is about.
“Turmeric (Curcuma longa), is one of the most powerful and most scientifically researched spices in the world. Traditionally used for Centuries across South East Asia and India and is now commonly consumed across the globe. It’s one of the main ingredients in the Indian dish curry and is known for its distinctive yellow colour (be careful, it can leave quite a stain on your kitchen counter!). This incredible plant is considered a medicinal herb and functional food as it can have potentially positive effects on your health. The active ingredient curcumin found in turmeric, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, it can help support your mood, boost skin health and can even assist the cardiovascular and digestive systems. So enjoy that golden latte and drink up!”.
The best way we can describe its taste is it’s sweet and spicy (think ginger + cinnamon), and is a really lovely drink as we head into cooler weather – it’s the type of drink that just feels warm and nourishing!

So, who’s up for giving it a try?! Pop into your fav cafe and order yourself a turmeric latte. We actually think you’re going to be pleasantly suprised… Here’s where you can find one around town:
