10 Reasons We Love The Surveyor General Inn Berrima

It’s an iconic piece of Highlands for a reason.

SHARE

It’s impossible not to love this special spot. Delish food, amazing history, and a welcoming atmosphere to boot.

Here’s why we’re obsessed with The Surveyor General Inn Berrima.

1. The history:

The Surveyor General Inn has been around since 1834! It’s actually Australia’s oldest continuously licensed pub and was one of the earliest buildings constructed in Berrima. It’s seen it all!

From convicts and travellers to Sunday sessions and family lunches. Imagine if those walls could talk, hey?

The building was nearly lost in the 60s, but the locals rallied to save it, and we’re so glad they did! There’s even an Act of Parliament making it possible to preserve the Inn & maintain its historic license.

2. Architecture + atmosphere:

Being as old as it is, a visit here is like grabbing a bevvie or a meal inside living history.

The Georgian sandstone walls, timber beams, and old-school details have stood the test of time, giving the inn a totally unique character.

And because it was so carefully restored, it feels solid and welcoming, while still keeping that rustic charm.

3. Food + Bistro 1834

Much like the inn itself, the food at Bistro 1834 brings together timeless flavours with a modern twist.

You can keep it classic with a schnitty, parmi or steak, or mix it up with dishes like duck confit, chargrilled Humpty-Doo barramundi fillet or a spicy falafel burger. Dessert lovers are covered too, with tempting options like sticky date and macadamia pudding… yum.

Little ones are sorted with a kids’ menu full of crowd-pleasers like snags and fish and chips.

Whatever you order, it’s bound to be a hit, and chances are you’ll be back to work your way through the rest of the menu.

4. Community events

There’s loads of community fun to be had at The Surveyor General Inn. Monday sees the song circle, where locals come together for an informal jam session. All are welcome!

Tuesdays from April to October are trivia nights. Get your nerd on and test your knowledge with the crew.

And when spring hits, ‘Saturdays and Sundays on the Stone begin’, with an awesome line-up of live and local music.

We keep ourselves regularly updated on the happenings of the inn through their website and social media, and we reckon you should do the same.

5. The spaces

There’s plenty of different spots around The Surveyor General Inn. Relax to the max on a sunny day in the outdoor beer garden or pull up a seat on the verandah to some people watching.

Take things indoors and get amongst all that heritage beauty. Did we mention they also have an open fire? Plonking yourself down in front of it on a chilly day… talk about livin’ the dream.

6. Local love

Alongside the regular weekly happenings at the inn, they also get behind the community with other wonderful celebrations and support.

Things like meat raffles to raise money for local charities, seasonal events like fathers’ day and mothers’ day, movie nights, creative sessions, and much more!

Again, to keep on top of all the fun, make sure to follow their socials!

7. The location

The Surveyor General Inn is right smack-bang in the middle of Berrima. A preeeeetty sweet place to be located if you ask us!

The village of Berrima is such a vibe. Full of gorge stone buildings that are packed with stores selling all the good stuff, like handmade sauces and chutneys, locally made jewellery, homewares, fresh baked goods, patisserie treats, and classic lollies.

Berrima also has cafes, restaurants, and of course, this incredible country inn plus a great park for the kiddos.

A visit to the inn could easily be timed with a day out in Berrima, giving you even more reason to pay a visit.

8. It’s available for private bookings

The inn is also fab for birthdays, catch-ups, or any celebration. They’ve got bookable spaces and function packages that are flexible to suit different budgets.

Give them a buzz or jump online to get organising. The team will handle the hard stuff, and your special day will be epic!

9. Dog friendly.

Fido doesn’t have to stay home on your next pub trip. All doggos are welcome in the front bar and ‘On the Stones’, so the whole fam can enjoy a day out. Woof!

10. Warm, genuine hospitality

And last but certainly not least, the friendly welcome atmosphere at The Surveyor General Inn is what gives it that extra touch. Every time we visited, we’re greeted with big smiles, incredible service, and a feeling we’re home!

Head over for a visit yourself and you’ll know exactly what we’re talkin’ about.

Ok peeps, round up your pals, your pup, or just yourself, and make your way to The Surveyor General Inn.

See you there!
