Plenty of events, activities and ideas to keep the kids entertained these school holidays
Whether you love them, or you can’t wait for them to be over – they’re approaching and approaching fast!
And after another typical Southern Highlands winter, we are VERY ready to get outside and have some fun.
As always, there’s plenty for kids to see, do and sign up for to keep them busy, active and happy.
So, here’s a list of fab things for kids to do in the September school holidays in the Southern Highlands, and be sure to head to our Event Directory for loads more activities and fun to be had.
1 // Wallet friendly ideas + inspo
School holidays don’t have to be exey. Keep the wallet in the pocket and your money in the bank with this list of fun things to do for free in the Highlands.
2 // Artsy type
Let the kiddos release their inner creativity with a range of super fun art workshops.
Mary Lou Pavlovic is running her awesome spring school holiday Art Workshops, chock-full of hands on fun and activities.

Adele from Scissors Paper Brush is also hosting a range of workshops like creating a friendly frog artwork using mixed media or making potted cacti and succulents out of Magiclay [so fun]. Check them all out here.

3 // Spring camp
Take a look at this tried and tested school holiday fave – the Highlands Tennis School Holiday Camps are the all about exploring exciting activities, making great memories and fostering new friendships.
The Holiday Camps aren’t just focused on tennis [but when they do get on the court, they’re being taught by world-calss coaches!], there’s a load of fun activities throughout the day, plus themed days as well [think Olympics, Colour War and more].
And best of all, the camp leaders focus on the values of belonging, friendship and sportsmanship throughout the day which creates such a great environment. It’s good stuff!

4 // Kids in the kitchen
Anna Phillips- Highlands cooking queen of One Buddy Cook will be running her at-home cooking classes- Young OneBuddy Cooks throughout the school holidays.
No drivin’ around the Highlands from one joint to the next, this one can be all done at home and 2 little cooks are included in the booking, perfect for sibling time or a super fun playdate!
This is a fantastic way to teach your little ones an amazing life skill- and hey if you all get to enjoy something tasty as a result- win, win!

5 // Mini musicians
If you’ve got a kiddo who loves to jam out, or even one who’s curious about learning an instrument or making their own music then most definitely sign them up for this Song Writing and Music Production Workshop with River Road Creative Academy. The free 2-part workshop will run on Monday 30 September and Wednesday 2 October 2024 from 10am to 3pm. It’s perfect for kids aged 7-14, and they’ll even have refreshments to keep everyone going.
There’ll be lots of musical instruments to try, or kids can bring their own!
This workshop is all about getting youngsters creating, writing, and recording their own music. They’ll learn new skills, have fun making their own songs, and by the end, they’ll have recorded pieces that show off their musical talents. LOVE IT!
River Road Academy will also be working their kid-friendly magic at the Moss Vale Arts Factory on various dates during the school holidays.
There’s the Open Studio Workshop at Moss Vale Arts Factory on the 3rd which will explore music, art and film, and the “New Beginnings” creative festival on the 11th, where music, urban art, and ceramics all come together for one awesome session.
Plus they’ll be popping into other locations all around the Highlands on the 4th, 9th and 10th for even more artsy and creative goodness. Check it out here.
6 // Kick it
Macarthur FC FREE School Holiday Clinics are back for the spring holidays and they book out fast so secure your spot quickly!
There will be four fun filled clinics held on the 2nd of October with options for mixed or girls only.

7 // Cycling adventures
If your kids are anything like ours, you have to run them around like greyhounds to wear them out! That’s why looooong bike rides or scooter rides are such a good idea in the school holidays.
Here’s a list of local family-friendly bike rides with options to suit all types of riders.
8 // Wonderful Wingecarribee
Wingecarribee Council is most definitely bringing the fun these school holidays.
Not only is Wingecarribee Out of School Hours Vacation care [WOOSH] available between Monday 30 September to Friday 11 October. They’re also hosting a range of free events for all the kidlets.
Check out the Learn to Skate Workshops for kids over 11 as well as the Introduction to Pump Tracks Workshop for anyone aged 12-24.
We also love the sound of the First Nations Weaving Course, Youth Cooking Classes, Robotics Holiday Course, plus LOADS of library fun.

9 // Runaway to the circus
Zero Central Circus are hosting their popular Aerial Hoop and Silks Workshops on October 10th in Mittagong!
Your kids will flip, climb, spin, and twirl like real circus stars while learning cool tricks on aerial silks and hoops. It’s all about fun, fitness, and confidence-building in a safe and non-competitive space.
With 27 years of circus experience, Zero Central Circus is an awesome place for your little ringleaders to let loose.
10 // The Empire strikes back
Empire Cinema in Bowral has some awesome holiday movies lined up for all ages – Runt and The Wild Robot are on the program for the younger kids, while teens will probably be looking out for Transformers One the next instalment in the iconic Transformers franchise.
Don’t forget about their Empire Kids Club too.
11 // PCYC fun
Woohooo – PCYC Southern Highlands always have a rockin’ school holiday activity program.
This spring they’re offering up a cool mix of both sporty stuff and arts and crafts – awesome!
Kids can choose from Gymnastics Skills Workshops, Minecraft Day, Soccer, Basketball, Animals Day, Gardening Day, Cricket, Dance, Volleyball and stacks more!
12 // Staycation Fun
