Keep moving and beat the winter blues with these tips from lovely Liz at Simply Fitness

Staying active during winter in the Highlands can be a challenge with our chilly, short days. Some days, it’s tempting to hibernate like bears until September rolls around. But staying active is important for both our health and happiness.

We chatted with Liz Rees of Simply Fitness to get her take on why keeping up with exercise in winter matters and how to tackle the usual hurdles [see cosy bed and warm couch].

Liz has been running Simply Fitness since 2011, an independent boutique fitness service in the Highlands. She is passionate about building strength and well-being in her Highlands clients regardless of age and fitness level.

Her fitness classes are small and straightforward, led by a dedicated instructor. They are unique and innovative workouts, including Barre, dedicated TRX suspension training, dedicated Pilates Arc classes, and reformer sessions. Precisely the kind of thing we need to get us through these next few chilly months and onwards.

Here’s Liz’s advice and tips on keeping those bodies moving and motivated through winter.

Why Staying Active Is Important

“During winter, it’s easy to slip into a more laid-back routine, which can take a toll on both your body and mind,” says Liz.

“Exercising year-round is important, but especially in winter. It boosts your immune system and helps fend off those pesky colds,” she emphasises. “With less sunlight, it’s common to feel a bit down, but exercise releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones that lift your spirits.”

Choosing a bright indoor spot is perfect for catching some sunlight without freezing, whilst you work out. At Simply Fitness, they’ve got a wall of windows that let in plenty of natural light, keeping things warm and well-lit without that nasty chill.

Liz also highlights the role of physical activity in managing winter cravings.

“Let’s face it, winter’s all about comfort food and red wine. Staying active helps you balance that out and maintain a healthier lifestyle,” she suggests.

We’re a sucker for a lamb shank pie and a cab-sav at this time of year, so we get it!

Staying active this time of year is also important for maintaining those healthy habits you’ve probably worked so hard on.

“If you’ve been hitting the gym all year, why stop now just because it’s chilly outside?” Liz advises, emphasising the importance of keeping up with your fitness routine to maintain your hard-earned progress.

And keeping up your workouts during winter isn’t just about staying active, it’s also about feeling in control even when it’s cold out. According to Liz, sticking to your exercise routine can give you a steady rhythm that fights off those winter blues. “When you keep up with your health and fitness goals, even when it’s chilly, it really helps you stay on top of things,” she explains. It’s all about maintaining that momentum and energy, so you don’t fall into the trap of feeling sluggish during the colder months.

Getting And Staying Motivated

We’ll admit winter throws a few hurdles our way when it comes to staying active. Sometimes the chilly temps and shorter days can really zap our motivation. Another thing that trips us up is the lure of indoor cosiness. When it’s cold, we tend to hunker down inside, which means more sitting and less moving.

But with some advice from Liz, we’re ready to roll!

Liz suggests focusing on your motivation or “why” for staying active. “Your why could be anything from wanting to avoid being in a nursing home at 65 to wanting to keep up with your kids or grandkids. It’s important to have a clear reason for why you want to stay active, especially during the tougher months,” she points out.

“I get that it might seem a bit daunting, but I suggest picturing yourself a year from now. Think about how amazing you’ll feel if you’ve achieved that goal, and then think about how it might feel if you haven’t. That visualisation can really help keep you motivated.”

Setting realistic goals and creating a routine that fits your lifestyle is also a biggie. “Find an activity you enjoy and can realistically fit into your schedule. It could be anything from Pilates to walking or even an online yoga class. The key is to do something you like at a time that works for you,” Liz adds.

Ideas For Staying Active

Okay, we’ve got our workout gear on, our joggers are laced up tight and our water bottle is full, what next?

“Whether it’s Pilates, taking walks, boxing, or even joining a winter soccer league—whatever floats your boat,” says Liz.

Not every activity is everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s all about finding something you enjoy and can stick with.

And timing is key too.

“No point saying you’ll wake up for a 6 am run if you’ve never been a morning person, hate running, and despise the cold! Instead, maybe yoga class after work would suit you better.”

Or hey, if a Sunday bush walk is more your vibe, go for it! The trick is to be flexible with your schedule, know what’s non-negotiable, and find something that you genuinely like doing.

We really enjoy the variety of classes at Simply Fitness, Pilates, TRX, Cardio, Boxing, and more. Plus, Liz’s Personal Training is fantastic for when we want that extra individual attention. It’s perfect for beginners needing extra support on their fitness journey or anyone who prefers a more private workout experience.

Keeping active in winter is a big deal for your body and mind. Yeah, it’s tough with the cold and shorter days, but squeezing in some exercise does wonders. It boosts your immune system, lifts your mood, and helps balance out all those cosy winter treats.

The trick is to stay motivated, set realistic goals, and have a go at classes or workouts until you find what you love.

If you’re keen to get moving, then we recommend checking out Simply Fitness. There are classes for everyone, whether you’re just starting out or have been at it for a while. It’s a friendly spot where Liz makes sure Highlanders feel comfortable with their fitness journey. We love the focus on real, innovative ways to keep you active and feeling great.

And As Liz wisely puts it, “You’re only cold if you stand still. Keep moving, and you’ll raise that core temp in no time.” So, bundle up, get moving, and make the most of the winter season.
