How Dermal Therapy Treatments Heal And Rejuvenate The Health Of Your Skin
We met the wonderful Mardi Johnson when she brought her 25 years of experience in the world of dermal therapy and integrated dermatology to the Highlands and opened The Skin Club in Bowral last year.
Since then, three of our team have been seeing Mardi regularly for facials, peels, microdermabrasion treatments and some Healite LED therapy and we have to say….we are lovin’ ourselves sick, people! The results we’ve seen in a short space of time have been pretty awesome.
We thought we’d share a bit more about these types of dermal therapy treatments so you guys can get an understanding of how easy it is to heal and transform the health of your skin too.
So, we asked Mardi to talk us through the treatments, why it’s important to have them as part of our skin routine and why we need them in our lives.
Let’s go!

1 // First of all, what is Dermal Therapy and how is it different to a Beauty Therapist?
A Beauty Therapist is someone who makes you look beautiful from top to toe – from eyebrows to pedicures and everything in between.
A Dermal Therapist focuses on the health of your skin. I use treatments and products to optimise the health of your skin. It may be a specific treatment, a particular machine I use, a product targeting a specific issue such as rosacea or pigmentation, or a combination of all those things.
I’ve also studied Integrated Dermatology which looks at how other elements of our lives and lifestyle impact our skin – stress, nutrition, hormones, emotional wellbeing, trauma – these underlying causes all impact skin health.
Everything I do is bespoke and targeted to your skin – there’s no one size fits all treatment.

2 // Fab! Well, let’s chat through the individual treatments starting with Facials.
The Essential Facial is one of the bespoke treatments I’ve mentioned. No one facial is ever the same. I use a range of products to target your specific skin concerns or lifestyle impacts on your skin. One month I may be rehydrating your skin if you’ve had a big month of celebrating, let’s say!
Or perhaps you’ve spent a lot of time at the beach over the summer. The next month, your skin may be in better condition, so I’ll focus on building on that. Many years of experience means I can tell by the look and feel of your skin what it needs.

3 // Tell us about the different types of Peels you offer.
Peels are a fantastic way to get strong results in a short space of time. I offer a number of different peels each targeting specific skin issues such as pigmentation and acne. Or for clients focusing on turning back time with fabulous anti-aging results.
Peels have a reputation for being uncomfortable with a long recovery time, but that’s not the case at The Skin Club. The key is making sure your skin is well prepped. Your skin will feel hot, and tingle for five minutes, but that’s it.
4 // Why is Microdermabrasion so effective?
If a client comes to me, one of the first things I’ll do is a Microdermabrasion treatment. It’s fantastic for removing dead skin which is a barrier to rehydration. There’s no point having a rehydrating facial when none of it is going to get through.
There’s a misconception that Microdermabrasion can be painful, but it doesn’t hurt. The machine I use has a vacuum system in it and a diamond head.
The diamond head gently exfoliates and buffs your skin which helps reduce clogged pours and allows your skin to rehydrate more effectively. It reduces clogged pores, prevents breakouts and is a high-impact way to restore the health of your skin.

5 // Good to know! So tell us about Dermal Micro Needling and how that works.
If you’re looking to reduce fine lines and scarring, this treatment is a great option and it’s not as scary as it sounds. People get a little apprehensive when there are needles involved but they are microneedles and I am very gentle when I do the treatment – you’ll never come back if I hurt you, right?
We create micro channels in the skin and infuse those channels with a concentrated formulation of active ingredients – it’s a very effective way of getting extra nutrients into the skin. The skin is triggered to stimulate new collagen and elastin which reduces those fine lines or scars.
I use a mask straight after the micro needling which calms the skin down immediately, and then I use a LED light which calms the skin down even more. When you walk out, you’ll look a little flushed, as though you’ve just been to the gym, but that’s it.

6 // Now, we’re hearing [and seeing] some pretty fabulous feedback about Healite LED treatment – tell us more about that!
The Healite LED treatment is such a powerful and non-invasive tool to have in your skin health arsenal!
It’s a powerful machine formulated to heal your skin. It doesn’t matter if you have good, bad or broken skin, it restores the skin cells to their natural form and builds up elasticity and collagen again.
There are two forms of light therapy I use. Yellow LED Light Therapy is great for healing, skin rejuvenation and reducing redness. Blue LED Light Therapy treats acne and hormonal breakouts.
We get great results from Healite LED treatments!

7 // So, what if someone is keen to try one or more of these treatments?
I offer everyone a free skin consultation which takes about 45 minutes. I use that time to get an understanding of your history, your habits and your current skin care treatment – if you have one.
From there, I can get a good feel for what’s happening with your skin and decide on a strategy to optimise the health of your skin. It may be a specific treatment, a particular machine that I use, a product that targets a precise issue such as rosacea or pigmentation, or a combination of all those things.
And then we get to work!
