Mates Nick Marland and Jack Malavey, who run Waratah Building, have been doing some mighty fine building work in our Southern Highlands and now they’ve got the awards to prove it!
Receiving a whopping 5 awards for both regional and local excellence, these guys need a well-deserved pat on the back. We took a deep dive into what each of these awards means and helped ourselves to a little goosey-gander at some of the homes that got them there!
Come check it out with us.
1 :: 2023 Master Builders Awards (Southern Region) – Best Contract Home – ‘Paloma’ Bowral
Um okay, this place is STUNNING and most definitely a winner in our books.

‘Paloma’ brings together old-school charm and contemporary flair, with that classic street style and modern pool pavilion, guest quarters, and outdoor hangout spots.

Waratah Building were recognised for their amazing work on this home for showcasing building excellence in the Southern Regions of NSW. That includes the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven and Snowy Mountains region- It’s a pretty big group and an outstanding achievement- cracker work guys!
Just one more peek, please?

AAAAH we’re in love!
2 :: 2023 Master Builders Awards (Southern Region) – Best Granny Flat – ‘The Cottage’ Berrima
We totes envy the granny who gets to live in this flat- just take a look!

Nestled at the back of another property, this iron-clad home blends riiiight into the landscape. It’s made from recycled materials like brick, iron, and timber.
And as the guys at Waratah Building told us:
“We’re all about finding the best, most efficient options for building. Our focus is on keeping clients informed with the latest info. Our eco-friendly practices involve suggesting solar, double-glazing, waste reduction, and using recycled materials.”

The open living area has a cool kitchen, vinyl plank floors, and lots of French doors connecting inside and outside, absolute bliss. Waratah Building came away with an award for best Granny Flat in the Southern Region and yeah, we 100% get it.

3 :: 2023 Master Builders Awards (Southern Region) – Best Alteration & Addition – ‘The Old Rectory’ Sutton Forest
These guys are not just killing it in the new builds, they’re also smashing it in the alteration, addition and renovation game as well. Just look at this beautiful 1800s baby that has had an absolutely gorgeous addition.

“With its traditional style and detailed features, our top goal was making the new addition seamlessly match the old, like it’s been there for 150 years. We added new doorways through the double-brickwork and had to rework the old lintels above existing windows.” Waratah Building told us.

We can only imagine the level of trust you would need with your builder to do work on such a historical beauty.
“Our clients trust us, which is a big deal considering they’re spending a lot of money on the project. You need to be able to trust your builder when you’re investing in this. We’re actually friends with a lot of our clients still and catch up for drinks with them or make sure we can help them out when they want to do more extensions, renos or builds down the track.”
How good?! And how good is this?

4 :: 2023 Local Business Awards Southern Highlands – Most Outstanding Service & Trade
The next two awards are not for one place in particular but for how well these guys run their biz as a whole. [Pretty darn well it seems]. Just look at those smiling faces.
“Excellent customer service and high-quality craftsmanship are the key elements of our business. We pride ourselves in always answering the phone, and getting back to email enquiries promptly.” Say the guys at Waratah Building.
“Clients choose Waratah Building because our team comprises trade-qualified professionals with real-world construction management experience. We’re all about enhancing established systems to deliver top-notch projects efficiently and competitively, every time.”
We sure do believe you with an award like that- well-done guys!

5 :: 2023 Local Business Awards Southern Highlands – Business of the Year 2023
Wow, guys, this is huge! Southern Highlands Business of the Year for 2023 what a win. We bet you’re riding high on that one and so you should be. And what’s even better, Waratah Building are supporting other Highlands locals in the process.
“Waratah Building is always seeking to support our local community. In 2022, we competed as a team in the Husky Triathlon and decided to use this as a way to raise much-needed funds for a local charity, Pop In, who are a not-for-profit service that helps women and children who live in fear of domestic violence, control and abuse. Considering our company is predominantly male, we saw this charity as a very fitting cause and our tagline was “We’re Doing It For The Ladies”. We sought local sponsors and set up a GoFundMe page where anyone could donate towards our team competing. We also sold branded hats & singlets and then threw a family BBQ at the end of the day for those who competed or came down to support us. We were so proud to hand over $11,425 to Pop In after the event.”
Amazing!
Hats off to Waratah Building and their hard work that has led to incredible success. You guys will probably have to start reinforcing your trophy shelf soon with all the weight it’s carrying. Lucky you know how!
