We dream of a home that is organised! One where everything has its place and we’re not suddenly finding the kitchen scissors in our bedroom dresser or the cat bowl in the kids’ toy box [If you know, you know]

If you’re just like us, you might be wondering where to begin! It’s great to dream about having a perfectly organised utensil drawer or a bathroom cabinet for actual bathroom stuff only, but we need some practical systems to make it happen!

We asked Gillian from Daisy Declutter & Downsizing for helpful strategies to get started, and she delivered! Now, let’s hear from Gillian.

Keeping a neat and tidy home can sometimes feel like learning a secret art, right? But guess what? It’s not as elusive as you might think. Let’s dive into the techniques that can turn you into a home organisation maestro.

1:: Set Up Organisational Systems

Alright, so where do we start? How about we set up a little home for everything? Yeah, that’s right, every single thing in your home should have its own cosy spot. Whether it’s that pesky set of keys that always go missing or the toys that your children leave around, let’s find a place for them. It’s a game-changer, promise!

The trick is to make these systems so intuitive and easy that you won’t even have to think about where things go. Before you know it, you’ll be putting things away on autopilot.

2:: Regular Cleaning and Tidying

Consistency is the secret sauce here. It’s like going to the gym – the more you stick to a routine, the better the results. So, let’s try and get into the habit of cleaning and tidying up regularly. A quick fifteen-minute tidy-up each day, or maybe a dedicated cleaning day each week. You choose what fits your lifestyle!

Break these tasks into bite-sized chunks so they won’t feel overwhelming. Remember, a little bit of maintenance every day keeps the mounting clutter at bay.

3:: The ‘One In, One Out’ Rule

Next up, my favourite rule – the ‘One In, One Out’ principle. Each time a new item struts into your home, an old one waves goodbye. It’s all about balance, folks!

This rule is your secret weapon against the silent enemy of clutter. After all, an organised home isn’t about owning fewer things, it’s about owning the right things that spark joy or serve a purpose.

Note: Here, I’m referring to the old item. So if you got a new pan, you should remove the old pan and nothing else. If it’s still in good nick make sure to donate it so that someone else can enjoy it instead.

4:: Seasonal Decluttering

Despite our best efforts, some clutter just has a way of creeping back in. That’s why we swear by seasonal decluttering. Whether it’s during a vibrant spring clean or a year-end clear-out, these sessions are perfect for reassessing what you own and updating your organisational systems.

This method is inspired by India, where every year people deep clean their houses before Diwali, a festival.

And hey, there’s no need to stress over these deep cleaning sessions. We at Daisy Declutter are always ready to roll up our sleeves and help make this process efficient and stress-free.

5:: Making it a Family Affair

Lastly, let’s not forget that teamwork makes the dream work. Get everyone on board the tidy train! Assign age-appropriate chores to the kiddos and make tidying up a fun, family activity.

Sharing the workload lightens the load and gives everyone a sense of responsibility. Plus, working as a team is always more fun, right? So, are you ready to take on this journey of mastering the art of order? Your organised, clutter-free home is waiting!
