THE FOLD LOVES A STICKY BEAK // Bundaroo House

Don’t you just love seeing what’s behind the front doors of some of the most beautiful homes in The Highlands? We do too, and happily admit to being right Stickybeaks!

That’s why we’re excited to share some stunning shots of Bundaroo House in Bowral.

Tina Tziallas is the Director of Tziallas Architects, a design focused architectural studio based in Bowral. Tina and Tony were asked to transform historical Bundaroo House, by designing a beautiful and sustainable addition to this heritage cottage.

“The clients were keen to make sure the existing cottage appeared unchanged from the street,” Tina explains.

“Privacy, sustainability and a layout that complemented the way they went about their daily lives was also important.”

Soooooo, let’s have a stickybeak……it would be rude not to, right??

The modern interior and addition, and the traditional façade of the cottage are of course strikingly different, but by keeping period features and lightening up the interior of the original part of the house, the transition from country cottage to cutting edge modern home gels beautifully.

The design brief included creating a large entertainer’s kitchen in the heart of the home. This was achieved through designing an open plan kitchen / dining area with high ceilings and a huge island bench in the centre of the space.

“The island bench is big enough to operate as a work station and an entertaining area at the same time. This gave our clients the option to chat with their guests while they were cooking, making sure they were part of the party or gathering and not be removed from their guests,” Tina says.

Privacy and maximising the solar-passive performance of the house was also part of the brief. Smart landscape design, strategically situated courtyards, and large eaves helped achieve this objective.

“It was important to allow sunlight to keep coming in to the old house, so new work was linked to the existing awning which still allows the sun to sneak in,” says Tina.

“We also wanted to create beautiful, soft acoustics within the open plan living space so used timber battens on the wall and ceiling to achieve that.”

The stunning pool is centrally situated in the backyard, surrounded on three sides by the exterior of the house, creating privacy – an important part of the design brief.
