The team at Tziallas Architects was asked to retain the existing 1930’s house on the property and create a contemporary addition around the beautiful trees in the garden (we love that!) that was family-friendly.
So, let’s have a little look-see, shall we?
“We had some amazing views to work with, so allowed lots of glass in the design to capture the sky, the view and the misty fog that settles over the Bowral township,” says Tina Tziallas, Director of Tziallas Architects.
“We also stepped the new works to suit the topography of the site which let us work with the existing trees and landscape elements, as well as connect to the ground where we could.”
Energy efficiency was also an important part of the design and decision making process when finalising materials.
New works included thermally broken double glazed windows to keep the chilly Highlands winter at bay and a geothermal system connected to in-slab hydronic heating. Solar panels have been installed too.
“The exteriors were finished with natural timber and standing seam cladding which gives the home a dramatic and solid finish,” says Tina.
Creating a family home that combined a lovely, warm family vibe, practicality and contemporary finishes challenged the design team as both living and bedroom spaces were relocated.
“We relocated the communal space into the new addition and re-arranged the bedrooms and bathrooms in the existing dwelling footprint. It was important that the bedrooms and bathrooms were more suited to a family so functionality was a priority,” Tina explains.
“The larger family and living spaces still needed to have a comfortable, family home feel, so materials had to embody a natural and warm feel whilse being robust. The burnished concrete floors are not only energy efficient, they’re also hard-wearing. Luci.D Interiors worked alongside us to ensure there was consistency in look and feel right throughout the house,” says Tina.
Interior finishes have been softened by tactile and plush furnishings, and natural materials.
And can you just imagine having Friday night wines with friends out on this deck? Sooooo gorgeous.
Or grabbing brekkie with the family at this kitchen bench? Love it!
“Of course, this doesn’t happen without an amazing team,” Tina says.
“We worked with some fantastic like-minded companies to meet the brief, get an incredible finish and have a happy family move in!”
