We love having a sneaky peek into the gorgeous homes of the Highlands and this month we visited the home of Jessian Polk of Carousel Lifestyle at The Mill in Bowral.

This unique residence is called The Chalet and is tucked away in old Bowral. Thick stone walls, large exposed beams, repurposed materials, and with a view across to the iconic treelined silhouette of Oxley Hill, this 12 year old home is full of stories and personality.

We love the rustic detailing throughout the home, especially the large exposed timber beams originally from Sydney’s historic Pyrmont Bridge. Original bolts and metal hardware form part of the timber beams, telling the tale of their past….but at the same time creating a brand new story with these natural and repurposed materials working perfectly together in this grand home.

How gorgeous does the stone wall and timber beams look sitting side by side? Love it.

Vintage Timbers

A magnificent tree trunk inSIDE – yep inside! – is a focal point of The Chalet, standing tall in the living area and kitchen. This majestic trunk is the hero of the space, giving the room an incredible sense of scale. And a conversation starter for when people come to visit!

Light pours into the room from huge windows looking out to swaying gumtrees. We have to say, there’s something about the large pieces of stone and wood within the home that leave you feeling grounded and also sheltered from the harsh Highlands winds (which were whipping around on the day we visited!).

There is some incredible artwork throughout the home. The contemporary style of the artwork and these pops of colour worked as a perfect contrast to the natural materials within the building.

The cosy interiors are so warm and inviting thanks to neutral colours, unusual textures and eye-catching finds from Jessian’s travels and of course, homewares from Carousel Lifestyle.

And the exterior of the house is like a piece of art in itself! The greys and blues of the stonework blends beautifully with the weathered dark grey of the historic timber beams and the natural browns and accents of the newer wood.

What a beauty! See what we mean when we said The Chalet has its own personality and stories?
