The Wingecarribee community’s passion for turning trash into treasure has gotten a major boost with the opening of the new Upcycle Centre (UC) at Moss Vale Resource Recovery Centre. After 11 years of outsourcing recycling services to Reviva, the Council has now taken management of the centre in-house to continue to build on the incredible work that has been happening at the Resource Recovery Centre in Moss Vale.
We were curious about what these changes meant for locals and decided to find out more.
Here’s everything we learnt:

New Services And Community Benefits
Including a fresh new name, there are also some awesome new services on the way at the centre. Like the ‘Repair Cafe’ which is set to be opened soon. Despite the name, the cafe is not actually a spot for a cuppa but instead, a spot where locals can bring their items that are in need of fixing and use the tools and space provided to fix them up. We think this is an excellent way to avoid more landfill and keep those precious [and important] things in our homes much longer.
There’s also a ‘Test and Tag’ service in the planning where accredited technicians will be testing electronic appliances to make sure they are safe and functional.

Continuing Their Amazing Partnerships
Right now, the Upcycle Centre partners with the organisation “Bicycles for Humanity” and will continue to. They are an organisation that refurbishes bicycles that have been donated to the centre and sends them to underprivileged children worldwide. To know that such a wonderful initiative is happening in our local community genuinely gives us so much pride to be Highlanders.
There are also plans for other amazing future partnerships as well like working with local charities and nonprofits to provide essential items, like furniture, for those in need, such as folks transitioning out of domestic violence situations.
Educational Workshops
The UC is also planning to provide us locals with some incredible opportunities to learn all about sustainability and how to use it in our daily lives. The Waste Wonder Workshops plan to turn willing Highlanders into waste champions with fun and informative sessions on topics like Pink Welding, Re-upholstery, Fashion Upcycling, Knife Making, Lead Lighting, Beeswax Wraps, Quilting, Native Propagation and Seed Starting, Worm Farming, and more. Ooooh, we can’t wait!!!!

Get Your Hands On Some Excellent Finds
The Upcycle Centre will still be packed with loads of awesome second-hand and upcycled goodies for you to snag at a steal and find something totally one-of-a-kind.
Seriously, strolling around the massive space is a blast, and you’ll be amazed at all the cool stuff you can score. From furniture to books, sports gear, gardening stuff, bling, workout gear, and even treats for your furry pals, they’ve got it all!
In fact, we recently heard an incredible story about a couple who furnished their Airbnb with nearly 95% of items from the Upcycle Centre. Isn’t that just amazing? Maybe we’ll have to track this super cool couple down to learn some more about how they did it. [Stay tuned].

Using the Upcycle Centre means you’re not just helping the planet; you’re also saving money and making a difference with every purchase. Plus, every item you rescue from the trash heap gets a new lease on life instead of ending up in the landfill.
It’s all about turning trash into treasure and we think the Upcycle Centre is really making sustainable living much easier for us locals.
