It’s safe to say we’re really spoiled for choice when it comes to walks, parks and playgrounds in the Highlands.
And while we don’t play favourites, we have a lot of love for Lake Alexandra [which by the way is soooo much more than just a lake].
This stunning Mittagong gem sits surrounded by the most lush bushland, with a pathway that’s perfect for literally everyone. You’ll see early morning dog walkers getting their steps in, families making the most of afternoon sunshine, and locals squeezing in their evening wellness time. There’s this beautiful buzz of activity, but somehow it still feels peaceful and serene.

Locals and visitors absolutely adore this place [and honestly, who can blame them?]. The whole area is kept in pristine condition, with BBQ spots, picnic areas, and a playground to keep the kiddos entertained, not to mention a spectacular array of wildlife that call it home.
Hot summer days or crisp winter mornings – whenever you rock up, Lake Alexandra delivers completely different but equally gorgeous scenery.
Let’s dive into everything this Highland gem has to offer!

The Need-To-Knows
Is it good for families?
Absolutely! From great grandma to little bub, this place is made for family outings. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake, feed those ever-hungry ducks, spread out a picnic blanket or just let the kids run wild on the grass.
Is it accessible?
Super accessible! The entire reserve welcomes all ages and abilities with open arms. The pathway is beautifully flat and even, with heaps of entry points around the lake. The playground features a Liberty swing for inclusive play, and there’s MLAK disabled toilet access available. Plus, parking is completely free [both in the carpark and on side streets] and even on busy days, you’ll snag a spot without drama.
Can I bring my dog?
Absolutely! Just keep them leashed and remember the golden rule of dog ownership – clean up after your pooch.
Are there stairs?
None whatsoever! The whole loop is blissfully flat.
How far is the walk?
One complete loop around this gorgeous pathway is roughly 800 metres.
How long will it take?
Totally depends on your pace and how many little ones [or excited pups] you’re herding along!
What does it cost?
Zero dollars. Zilch. Nada. Free as a bird!
Any insider tips?
Pack snacks [obviously] plus some proper duck food for the seemingly bottomless pit that is the local duck population. Fishing is totally allowed [the lake’s packed with carp], just keep any scaling and cleaning well away from little eyes and tidy up properly when you’re done.

Where Is Lake Alexandra Located?
You’ll find Lake Alexandra on Queen Street in Mittagong, just a 10-minute stroll from the train station.
The crazy thing is, the moment you step into this gorgeous reserve, you could honestly be in the middle of nowhere! All that traffic noise just melts away and suddenly it’s all chirping birds and peaceful nature sounds.

Lake Alexandra’s History
This beautiful lake has quite the glow-up story!
Back in the day, it was all business – a working dam supplying water to coal-hauling steam engines that transported coal from Mount Alexandra mine to the ironworks.
Now it’s been reimagined as the stunning centrepiece of this treasured local reserve. With all that fascinating history, plus its longtime reputation as a family favourite for outings and exercise, this place really has earned its special spot in Highland hearts!

Meet The Locals
Turtle Time
No matter how leisurely your pace, you definitely won’t be the slowest thing moving around Lake Alexandra! This gorgeous body of water is home to some absolutely adorable freshwater turtles who’ve made this their perfect safe haven [complete with fox-proof protection].
Keep your eyes peeled for a cheeky Leonardo [or maybe a Donatello or Michelangelo!] during your lake loop. You might spot them sunbaking on logs, having a swim, getting busy with nesting duties, or even making the bold decision to cross the road! If you see one attempting that last adventure, just gently scoop up your new shell-friend and pop them safely on the other side in the direction they were heading – don’t just plop them back in the water.
Hurry… you won’t want to miss them! Oh no wait actually, no need to hurry.
The Wild Bunch
Forget the white noise apps and machines – Lake Alexandra is serving up the real deal natural soundtrack. This place is home to an impressive abundance of birds, ducks, aquatic wildlife, water dragons, skinks, geese… and what a rowdy bunch they are too!
A generous local pointed us in the direction of the resident golden carp’s regular swimming spot as well as a group of lizards’ favourite basking rock. Even without a hot tip though, you’ll find signage around the lake with loads of info on the flora and fauna of the area.
Duck Duck Goose
Okay okay, we thought we had seen a few ducks in the Highlands.
We thought wrong.
THIS is where you see ducks in the Highlands.
It’s the ultimate duck watering hole and the meeting place of the Highlands duck society.
Pack some suitable [and easily digestible] duck food and have some fun feeding the feathered friends.

Steal A Quiet Moment
Even when Lake Alexandra is bustling with its usual crowd of families, joggers and dog walkers, you can still carve out your own little pocket of peace.
Find a spot to sit with your coffee, take those deep lungfuls of fresh Highland air, wander at your own pace, sprawl under a shady tree, or just plonk yourself on the soft grass for a bit of meditation.
Listen to the birds having their daily gossip, watch the lake’s glassy surface, try your hand at stone skimming, perch on a fallen log, or settle into one of those perfectly placed seats dotted around the water. There are honestly so many gorgeous spots to just pause, breathe, and let your mind wander.

Take A Hike
Got some serious walkers in your crew? You’re in luck! Several beautiful bush walks and longer hiking trails actually start right from the reserve, so you can use Lake Alexandra as your perfect home base.
Head out to conquer the Katoomba Lookout Loop Track or go chasing waterfalls on the 60 Foot Falls trail [just one of the many gorgeous cascades our region is famous for].
And the best part? When you return victorious and slightly knackered, there’s that beautiful soft lawn just begging you to stretch out those weary legs.

Picnics, Parties And Play…Oh My!
Lake Alexandra is perfect for families, couples, singles or anyone wanting to enjoy a bbq, picnic, birthday party, casual get-together or celebration.
You’ll find loads of sheltered seating and table spots, beautiful shaded lawn space to spread out, a big gazebo for larger groups, plus electric BBQs and toilets to keep everyone happy.
Just be prepared to share your goodies with the very familiar and ever-hungry duck dwellers.

Playground Pit Stop
Still got energetic little ones who aren’t quite ready to call it a day [seriously, where do they get that stamina]? The shaded playground is perfect for one final play session, complete with a Liberty swing for inclusive play so every child can join in the fun!
Nestled under gorgeous shade trees, the equipment stays cool even on those blazing Highland summer days. Parents can relax on nearby picnic tables while keeping an eye on the action, with toilet facilities including MLAK disabled access just a short stroll away.
Perfect for burning off that last burst of energy before the inevitable car nap on the way home!

The Scenic Gym
Time to flex those muscles on the outdoor gym equipment dotted around the pathway.
Who needs a stuffy indoor gym when you’ve got fresh Highland air and lake views as your workout backdrop!

What To Do Afterwards?
Mittagong has plenty to offer! There are some absolutely gorgeous shops to browse, plus there are some fab spots for a post-lake bevvie or bite to eat [Station Coffee House is always great].
