Exeter: A Little Slice Of English Countryside

The southern village of Exeter, just 15 minutes south of Moss Vale, is one of the Southern Highlands most quaint and desirable areas.

Settlement in the area began in the 1820s, but the village itself developed later, with the arrival of the railway in the late 1860s. The distinctive English character of Exeter is largely due to 19th-century nurserymen who planted exotic imported trees, creating the village’s signature leafy streets.

Exeter is described as a picturesque, historic village in known for its tranquil, English-style charm with manicured gardens and heritage buildings, including its iconic railway station and St Aidan’s Church.

The village serves as a peaceful rural retreat with a strong community feel, centered around its parklands, village hall, and famous general store.

The Exeter Village Market, held monthly, is a highlight, bringing the community together under the heritage trees in Exeter Park.

The Exeter General Store is a beloved institution offering specialty coffee and breakfast with a pleasant garden courtyard for outdoor dining.

Exeter features a much-loved primary school, daily train service, school buses to nearby high schools, active RFS brigade and community social groups.

Exeter is only one of a handful of locations in New South Wales that features a croquet club, which welcomes visitors and locals to their regular play sessions conducted on a finely manicured lawn court.

Boutique winery St. Maur Wines also feature in the surrounding area.

Real Estate Market

The median price for a house in Exeter, NSW, is around $2.5 million to $2.6 million, with figures varying slightly depending on the source and the exact reporting period.

For example realestate.com.au reported a median of $2,425,000 for houses based on 22 sales in the 12 months prior to its report, while Your Investment Property Magazine showed a median sale price of $2,487,500 for houses in the 12 months leading up to May 2025.

The market is `tightly held’ with limited real estate opportunities.

While the central village area features residential-sized house blocks, newer developments on Exeter’s fringe feature larger sized `lifestyle’ blocks, rural holding and smaller hobby farms: some of which have sold for $5 million plus.
