Moss Vale was established as a town by the state government of the day in 1861. The town was named Moss Vale after Jemmy Moss, a faithful servant of James Throsby.
The completion of the railway in 1867 established Moss Vale as a transport hub by linking the Southern Highlands to Sydney and other regions. This connection led to population growth and the expansion of local industry, including agriculture and dairying, in the area’s valleys. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Moss Vale developed from a rural settlement into a township with homes, gardens, and public buildings that reflected its growth and development.
Early settlers would have passed The Royal Oak Hotel which is now Briars Country Inn, crossing the Wingecarribee River, Christ Church, the first church in the Highlands, still stands and features magnificent painted walls and stained glass windows. Many of the district’s eminent pioneers are buried in its tranquil graveyard.
Fast forward to the twenty first century: Moss Vale is the centre of the Highlands – featuring bustling retail, cafes & restaurants, public and private schools, tertiary education campus, medical & dental facilities, lifestyle, sporting fields, championship golf course, home of the shire council headquarters, fashion, clubs and growing industrial/employment zone.
The town has a strong sense of community with many community clubs and associations, plus strong sporting ties in most games and codes. Parks, tree-lined walkways, wide streets and avenues and a range of residential options means most people can find a comfortable house to call home.
