RFS Get Ready Weekend 2025: Prepare Your Southern Highlands Property For Bush Fire Season

As bush fire season approaches in the Southern Highlands, residents and property owners are reminded of the importance of preparing homes, land, and families for the risk of fire. While recent wet conditions may have offered some relief, we all know how quickly the landscape can dry out after a few hot, windy summer days. Living in the Highlands means living with bush fire risk – and preparation is key.

What is RFS Get Ready Weekend?

Each September, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) hosts Get Ready Weekend events across the state. The aim is simple – to help communities understand their fire risk and take practical steps to protect their property before the season begins.

In 2025, Get Ready Weekend will take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, with local brigades throughout the Southern Highlands hosting events, open days, and community activities.

What’s Happening in the Southern Highlands?

Highlands brigades will be out in force to engage with locals and provide tailored advice. Activities include:

  • Bunnings BBQs and community stalls – grab a sausage sandwich and fire safety tips.
  • Events in Robertson and Bundanoon – featuring displays and information sessions.
  • Open fire sheds – visit your local brigade, meet volunteers, and learn about fire safety.
  • Canyonleigh Brigade’s street visits – taking the message door-to-door by speaking directly with property owners about their Bush Fire Survival Plans.

Why You Should Attend

By taking part in RFS Get Ready Weekend, Southern Highlands residents can:

  • Learn how to create or update a Bush Fire Survival Plan.
  • Understand the latest Fire Danger Ratings and what they mean.
  • Discover practical tips for maintaining a defensible space around homes and properties.
  • Connect with local RFS volunteers, who understand the unique fire challenges in our region.

How to Get Prepared

  • Visit myfireplan.com.au to create a personalised Bush Fire Survival Plan.
  • Check out local brigade events via the NSW Rural Fire Service website.
  • Start clearing gutters, trimming vegetation, and reducing fuel loads around your property before the hot weather arrives.

Mark Your Calendar

Get Ready Weekend 2025 is on 20–21 September. Don’t miss this opportunity to take action, connect with your local brigade, and ensure your Southern Highlands property and family are ready for bush fire season.
