Originally inhabited by the Tharawal Aboriginal people, Bowral was subsequently explored by Europeans such as John Wilson and John Oxley.

In 1798, John Wilson, an ex-convict, became one of the first Europeans to traverse the area during an expedition commissioned by Governor Hunter. Governor Lachlan Macquarie granted John Oxley 2,400 acres, which later became the basis for the town of Bowral. The establishment of the railway in the 1860s catalysed considerable development, transforming the town into a sought-after resort destination for affluent residents of Sydney. Today, Bowral is distinguished by its refined residences, landscaped gardens, and the presence of the International Cricket Hall of Fame.

The town and its surrounds cater for all generations: vibrant retail, dining and cultural offerings, hotels, quality accommodation, growing B&B sector, public and private primary & high schools, sporting facilities, clubs, social activities, medical facilities and public & private hospitals, events and, of course, Tulip Time.

For most, Sydney is a 90-minute drive. There is a regular train service available seven days a week. Private travel to the airport and overseas terminals is also available.

In fact, there’s something for everyone in Bowral.
