Southern Highlands Is A Magnet For 25-44 Year Old Homeseekers

Young Sydneysiders are saying goodbye to the Harbour City in big numbers. People are leaving Sydney in record numbers to move to regional areas, such as the Highlands, in search of affordable housing.

Earlier this week the Daily Telegraph published a story that should either delight or concern our area: “Data crunched by audit giant KPMG shows young Sydneysiders heading to areas including the Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Lake Macquarie in droves.”

KPMG urban economist Terry Rawnsley said more than 41,000 people left the Harbour City in search of cheaper housing last year.

“Sydney remains right up there as one of the world’s most expensive cities, with the median house price now at a new record high of $1.7m,” he said.

“This unenviable title has meant it’s not surprising more than 40,000 residents left the city in the last year in search for more affordable options.”

Mr Rawnsley said the biggest group leaving Sydney were aged between 25 and 44.

“While property prices in other major cities like Brisbane and Melbourne are relatively more affordable than Sydney, they are climbing to unattainable levels, forcing many to look beyond the major capital cities altogether. Cities such as the Gold Coast, Wollongong, and Newcastle have strong economies and need more workers,” Mr Rawnsley said.

The figures showed migration to the Southern Highlands jumped by more than 50 per cent in comparison to twelve months ago.

The Highlands’ immediate access to the Sydney region’s southern and south-western suburbs via car or public transport make it an affordable and convenient location.

Likewise, with many people able to work from home, or having to only attend the office for a few days a week makes regions, such as the Highlands, an attractive option.

With the expected influx to the Highlands predicted to maintain its flow and the increased opportunities that the soon-to-open Badgerys Creek airport will present, the question is whether the Highlands is prepared to provide additional essential services, housing and infrastructure to meet growth?

Likewise, will this growth on limited real estate stock and rentals push prices even higher?

Let’s wait and see.
