The Close Knit Villages Of Mittagong

Just north of historic Mittagong are the relatively new areas of Renwick, Braemar, Willow Vale and Balaclava. All within a stone’s throw of each other, but all very different in character.

Known mainly for a range of small to medium residential block-sizes, the individual communities offer something for everyone. Of importance, all have immediate access to the Hume Freeway – less than an hour to the Sydney metro area, 30-40 minutes to the Campbelltown shopping precincts and, of special note, immediate access to and from the new Badgerys Creek airport.

Retail, cafes, restaurants and schools are within the immediate Mittagong catchment – five minutes drive.

Let’s look at each area:

Renwick – a master-planned housing development featuring smaller, easy-to-manage blocks, located east of Old Hume Hwy.

Median price – $1,275,000.

Population of 573 (2016 census)

Elevation: 631 metres.

Community facilities include the Renwick Community Centre, and there is a cafe called Rennie’s at Renwick.

History: Renwick was once a home for dependent children (state wards) of all ages and both sexes. It closed in 1994 and was sold to developers.

Braemar – an area of two faces: residential and industrial. Braemar has a range of residential options from smaller, manageable blocks to larger one-acre options. Braemar is also home to many light-industrial businesses, transport and light manufacturing.

Braemar had a passenger train station on the Picton Loop railway line, which opened as Rushs Platform on 1 March 1867. In 1892 it was renamed Braemar to coincide with the renaming of the village. On 5 August 1978, the station was closed to passenger services.

Median house price – $945,000.

Population: 966

Willow Vale – mainly residential with medium to large residential blocks and homes. At the 2021 census, 826 people were living at Willow Vale.

Population 826 (2021 census).

Median house price, $1.15M

Balaclava – immediately north of Mittagong. Residential with small, medium and large residential options.

Population: at 2021 census there were 574 people living in Balaclava.

Median house price: $1.01M
