Wingello – A Village On The Move

The popular southern village of Wingello has colonial history dating back to the 1820s with the initial land grant of Wingello Park in 1824 and the construction of the main south road in the 1830s, which included a convict stockade at the site.

The name itself is derived from an Aboriginal term for the area, though the specific meaning is recorded as “to burn”.

The village developed around the railway station, which was established in the 1870s. The first significant colonial development was the 1824 land grant of Wingello Park, a 600-acre property given to Robert Mackay Campbell.
