Yerrinbool‘s history began with it being known as “Little Forest” before settlement, with its name derived from an Aboriginal word for the Wood Duck.

Its modern history started in 1919 with the opening of the Yerrinbool railway station, built to bypass the steep grades of the old Picton railway line that ran through Hill Top and Colo Vale. In the early 1920s the settlement grew with the opening of a post office, general store, and a saw-mill, followed by a school and a community hall built by local volunteers in 1938.

Today the village continues to grow and look set to take advantage of the growing enclaves of Bargo, Tahmoor and Wilton, some twenty minute drive away.

Pundits also believe that villages such as Yerrinbool will also benefit with the soon to open Badgerys Creek airport in 2026.

The local community is known to be both vibrant and sustainable. The community hall is central to many activities in Yerrinbool.  Hand built by volunteers in the 1930’s this hall has been shown some love over the years with the addition of a new kitchen and shaded outdoor area, making it popular with weekly preschool and playgroups.

The local RFS Brigade is also a vibrant and busy volunteer unit, responding to fires and many road incidents on the nearby Hume Expressway.

Yerrinbool Oval hosts both junior and senior sports including cricket and soccer and features a skate park and toilet facilities.

While retail is limited, Yerrinbool is a short drive to the commercial precincts of Mittagong, Bargo and Tahmoor.

Located on the Southern Highlands line, there is a regular train service between the Highlands and Sydney. Likewise, access to the Hume Expressway is convenient.
