St Mary's Cathedral, WA

Perched atop a hill in East Perth, St Mary's Cathedral serves as the spiritual heart of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth and the seat of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe. Officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it proudly overlooks Victoria Square, inviting visitors and worshippers alike.

The cathedral's construction unfolded in three phases, beginning with the original building completed in 1865. Ambitious plans in the 1920s envisioned a grand Perpendicular Gothic structure, but these were halted by the Great Depression. This left the cathedral partially expanded, featuring a new transept and sanctuary, while retaining the original nave.

For more than 70 years, the cathedral remained incomplete and required extensive restoration. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, successful fundraising led to a major expansion featuring a modern curved design, a striking second spire, and an underground parish centre. The cathedral closed for renovations in 2006 and reopened in December 2009, blending historic charm with contemporary architecture.
