This move gives Sturt the independence it needs to grow, innovate, and continue shaping the future of Australian contemporary craft and design.
For decades, Sturt has been a key part of Winifred West Schools, but with this new structure, the centre can now stand on its own while still maintaining its close ties to the school. It’s the best of both worlds; Sturt can thrive with its own vision, yet remain deeply connected to its educational roots.
With a newly appointed Board, Sturt is ready to step into its next phase, focused on growth, creativity, and a lasting community impact. This new chapter opens the door to new partnerships, increased funding opportunities, and an even more prominent place within the national craft movement. “Sturt has always been integral to the educational vision of Winifred West Schools,” says Geoff Marsh, Head of Frensham Schools. “This new structure strengthens that relationship, giving Sturt the independence to flourish while ensuring our shared commitment to creativity, art, and design endures.”
The centre is inviting the community to join in by becoming a Member and actively shaping Sturt’s future. By signing up, Members can vote at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) scheduled for 7 February 2026. Membership is available for just $50 for a year.
In addition to membership, Sturt is calling for nominations for its first elected Board, which will help steer the centre into this exciting new era. The future is looking bright, and Sturt’s first elected Board will play a key role in ensuring that the centre’s legacy continues to inspire, educate, and connect communities for generations to come.
Sturt Gallery & Studios is now fully equipped to continue its tradition of excellence while embracing new opportunities for creativity and learning. Whether you’re an artist, a supporter of the arts, or someone who appreciates the impact Sturt has had on the arts community, this is the perfect time to get involved.
