5 Effortless Ways To Create A More Harmonious Interior

Opal & Oak is a design studio that turns ideas into spaces you actually want to live in.

Owner and local Sacha Wark-de Boer mixes creativity with careful planning to craft interiors that feel personal, practical and full of style.

From new builds and renovations to furnishing a home from scratch, her team can handle everything from start to finish.

With an eye for thoughtful luxury, durable materials and layered details, Opal & Oak creates spaces that look amazing and work beautifully for everyday life.

And heads up, creating a beautiful, balanced space doesn’t need to be overwhelming.

With just a few simple shifts, your home can feel more calm, cohesive and considered.

Here are five of Sacha’s favourite low-effort tips to bring more harmony into any interior:

1. Light thoughtfully

Mood starts with lighting. If you want your space to feel relaxed and welcoming, avoid relying on ceiling downlights alone. Instead, layer your lighting: table lamps, floor lamps and task lighting can transform the energy of a room.

Bonus tip: Opt for warm white bulbs over cool white ones to avoid that clinical “dentist chair” effect.

2. Size up your rug

One of the most common styling missteps is a rug that’s too small for the room: it visually shrinks the space and throws off proportion.

Large rugs don’t need to be expensive though. You can even layer a smaller rug that you want to splurge on over a more affordable, oversized base rug. It adds depth, warmth, and extra texture too.

3. Play with texture

Harmony in design isn’t just about colour, it’s also about contrast and depth.

Especially in more neutral or tone-on-tone palettes, incorporating varied textures (like linen, wool, timber, ceramics, and boucle) keeps a space from feeling flat.

It creates a layered, tactile environment that feels thoughtful and welcoming.

4. Avoid the wall-hug

In larger rooms, avoid pushing all your furniture to the walls. Bringing pieces inward can create more intimate zones and help with flow.

If your sofa feels like it’s floating awkwardly in the middle of the room, try anchoring it with a sideboard or bench against its back, or a small side table nestled against one of the armrests.

Always measure and plan your layout in advance, masking tape is your best friend here!

Cozy armchair with red and white stripes, draped with a knitted blanket and round pillow. Nearby, a small green table with books and a cup, under soft lighting.

5. Zone your open-plan spaces

When styling open-plan living/dining/kitchen areas, use zoning techniques to subtly define each area.

Rugs are an easy go-to, but lighting works wonders too, specifically where ceiling lights are used more frequently than mood lighting.

Consider pendant lighting above a dining table or feature lighting above an island bench. It helps each area feel distinct, yet still part of a cohesive whole.

Lucky for us, the lovely couple Amy and Josh, fresh from saying ‘I do’ at Bendooley Estate, have given us just that.

They even shared how their special day went and it turned out beautifully.

Okay, come on, let’s be sticky beaks together.
