1. Light thoughtfully
Mood starts with lighting. If you want your space to feel relaxed and welcoming, avoid relying on ceiling downlights alone. Instead, layer your lighting: table lamps, floor lamps and task lighting can transform the energy of a room.
Bonus tip: Opt for warm white bulbs over cool white ones to avoid that clinical “dentist chair” effect.

															2. Size up your rug
One of the most common styling missteps is a rug that’s too small for the room: it visually shrinks the space and throws off proportion.
Large rugs don’t need to be expensive though. You can even layer a smaller rug that you want to splurge on over a more affordable, oversized base rug. It adds depth, warmth, and extra texture too.

											3. Play with texture
Harmony in design isn’t just about colour, it’s also about contrast and depth.
Especially in more neutral or tone-on-tone palettes, incorporating varied textures (like linen, wool, timber, ceramics, and boucle) keeps a space from feeling flat.
It creates a layered, tactile environment that feels thoughtful and welcoming.

															4. Avoid the wall-hug
In larger rooms, avoid pushing all your furniture to the walls. Bringing pieces inward can create more intimate zones and help with flow.
If your sofa feels like it’s floating awkwardly in the middle of the room, try anchoring it with a sideboard or bench against its back, or a small side table nestled against one of the armrests.
Always measure and plan your layout in advance, masking tape is your best friend here!

															5. Zone your open-plan spaces
When styling open-plan living/dining/kitchen areas, use zoning techniques to subtly define each area.
Rugs are an easy go-to, but lighting works wonders too, specifically where ceiling lights are used more frequently than mood lighting.
Consider pendant lighting above a dining table or feature lighting above an island bench. It helps each area feel distinct, yet still part of a cohesive whole.
